Roynon Raccoon Report
January/February Newsletter All About Roynon
Roynon Families,
Happy New Year! The start of 2019 marks the second half of our 2018-2019 school year. Yes, the first half of the school year is over already. Can you believe it? We are starting off the year by participating in the Great Kindness Challenge (see details below) during the week of January 28 - February 1. Please join us in spreading kindness to all those you meet.
Please consider joining us for our 2nd Annual STEM Night next week, Thursday, January 24th from 6-7 pm. This event will be for both parents and students, with parents attending a parent only session in the MPR and students participating in activities in classrooms at the same time. To ensure that we have enough space and materials for everyone, please rsvp HERE.
We also invite you to attend Take Your Child to the Library Day on Saturday, February 2 at Roynon. More details will be sent home about this exciting event soon.
Looking ahead, we are celebrating Read Across America Week February 25 - March 1. Parent Conferences will be held on March 5, 6, and 7 for those students not currently meeting grade level standards and by parent request. These three days are MINIMUM DAYS. Second trimester report cards will be sent home on Thursday, March 7. March 8 is a Student Free Day, as elementary teachers will be participating in a staff development day. In addition, there will be no school during Spring Break, April 1 - 5.
As you plan ahead, please keep in mind that our 3rd-5th grade students will be participating in state testing, CAASPP, from April 22 - May 9. It is very important that students are at school during this time, so please avoid scheduling any doctor/dentist appointments during the school day for these three weeks.
Thank you for your ongoing support. Together, we can ensure that great things happen every day.
Your Partner in Education,
Tammi DiGrazia
Roynon Principal
A Friendly Reminder (see below) ~ Please do not drop off your child prior to 7:45am. It is a safety issue, as there is no student supervision prior to this time. Thank you for your understanding.
Kids Heart Challenge Info - Supporting Those in Need
Each year, Roynon participates in helping those in need. For the past few years, we have chosen to support cancer patients with the Pennies for Patients program. This year, we are returning to a program Roynon has supported in the past, the American Heart Association's Kids Heart Challenge, formerly Jump Rope for Heart. Please help us reach our school goal of $10,000 in donations, while teaching our students about empathy.
The Kids Heart Challenge/Jump Rope for Heart will take place on February 1st at 8:30 am on the South Blacktop. It is the culminating event of our Kindness Week. Details about Kindness Week are below. We encourage your family to take the Family Kindness Challenge.
The Seven Habits of Healthy Kids
This month's focus is Habit #5 – SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD. For those of you who are interested in extending Habit 5 to home, here are some ideas:
- Practice reflective listening. Say something to your kids and then have them repeat back what you said. Do this until you feel like everyone in the family listens without thinking of a response simultaneously.
- Conflict Resolution: The next time there is a problem within the family have the involved parties sit down and listen to the other person’s point of view. They have to be able to restate the other person’s feelings before they can state theirs or respond to what was said. (“So what I heard you say was…”)
- Take family time to learn about other cultures
February's focus will be Habit #6 – SYNERGIZE. Below are some ideas for extending Habit 6 to home:
- Cook a meal together. Assign everyone a job to do.
- Decide on a TV watching schedule, so that everyone wins. Pick a show to watch together.
- Involve everyone with the planning of the next family vacation.

News from Beautification
The Beautification Committee would like like to thank everyone for bringing in recycling on Fridays. Recycling is relied on to help us complete the projects we do around campus, we could not do it without this help.
We love to welcome new members to beautification. Anyone interested in joining, or just interested in finding out what we’re all about, is welcome at any meeting. Our meetings are held at 3 PM the first Tuesday of every month in the Roynon library.
