BIS Newsletter - Week 3 Term 4 2022

Friday 4th November 2022

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Kia ora e te whānau,

This term we have been having whole school dance lessons with an outside agency called Footsteps. This has been amazing for our students who have responded positively and have been fully engaged in each lesson. The purpose of these lessons is to ensure that every student has the opportunity to participate in dance and meet the criteria set out in the NZ Curriculum. We have committed school funds to cover the cost so that every student could be involved.

Your child should be able to tell you the 5 elements of dance and show you a few of the moves or maybe even a complete dance that they have been learning.

As the term 4 progresses, our year 8 students are getting ready for the next transition in their schooling as they prepare for High School. They should all be enrolled in a College by now. We have several end of year events to celebrate the end of their time at Intermediate including a graduation night planned for 24 November. More details will be sent out soon.

Please monitor our school APP as we will use that a lot to send out reminders about school events.

Thank you to everyone who ordered Juicies and to those who have supported our fundraisers this week. It has been a fun week and the Athletics Day on Wednesday was a definite highlight. There are a lot of events and opportunities to participate in term 4 so please ask your child to share what is happening at school and what events are coming up.

Enjoy your weekend,

JoAnne

Upcoming Resilience Speaker

We are looking forward to welcoming Jake Bailey to our school as a motivational speaker on Monday 14 November. Here is a little bit about him.

Jake Bailey is a public speaker, the youngest #1 bestselling author in New Zealand history,

and a passionate educator on the power of resilience.

Jake first caused a global sensation in 2015, when his prize-giving speech as Head Boy at
Christchurch Boys’ High School went viral. A week before he was due to deliver this speech,
Jake was diagnosed with the most aggressive form of cancer known to man and given two
weeks to live if this was left untreated. Jake persevered through to make his speech from a
wheelchair, the video of which went on to touch the hearts of tens of millions and draw
praise from across the globe.
Since being announced in remission in 2016, Jake has gone on to share his story with over
70,000 people, through hundreds of speeches across dozens of cities. Through his
development of resilience and wellbeing strategies for corporates, organisations, and
schools across the globe, Jake has educated audiences ranging from elite athletes to
children in outback towns, Fortune 500 CEO’s to prison inmates, and foreign governments
to retirement homes on how we can most successfully overcome the adversity we all
inevitably face in life.
Jake is driven by having himself seen the powerful impact that resilience has had on his own
life both during and post-cancer, and consequently knowing the potential which this
trainable and attainable skill can have on the success and happiness of others.

Camp Meeting

Tuesday, Nov. 8th, 6pm

200 Birkdale Road

Auckland, Auckland

All parents of year 8 students are invited to attend a camp meeting on Tuesday 8 November at 6pm in the school hall. This is an opportunity to hear about our planned year 8 camp and ask lots of questions. Students welcome and hotdogs will be for sale on the night.

Athletics Day

On Wednesday this week the whole school enjoyed our athletics day in the blazing sunshine - a timely reminder of how important hats and sunscreen are at this time of year. The primary focus of the day was get involved and have a go, all the children either participated in the running, throwing and jumping events or helped with set-up, scoring and measurement. It was great to see everyone trying new sports and improving on their personal efforts.

At the fun end of the day the House relay race was won by Rimu and Ngā Hua won the Class relay race. Unfortunately there was no time left for a Staff race!

Over the next few days we will collate the results and hold any play-offs to determine who qualifies to go to the Inter-School Athletics Day later in the month.

HPV and Boostrix Immunisations

The public health nurses will be onsite to finish the HPV immunisations for year 8 students on Monday 7 November.

There are also a few year 7 students that still require their Boostrix vaccine and if they happen to be a school that day, the nurses plan to call them up too.

Only students who have parental consent and are well on the day will be immunised.

Dance Classes

Footsteps Dance Company’s instructor Kate has been taking weekly classes with groups of students in the hall. Each week Kate teaches a different set of dance moves that make the week’s feature dance. It’s wonderful to see all students participating fully in this exciting and informative programme of learning.

Our Spooky Dress Up Day/Non-Uniform Fundraiser!

Our fundraiser dress up day raised a total of $731.00 towards Camp and EOTC week!

Science Extension

The Science Extension students were invited by the Science department of Birkenhead College last Monday 31st October 2022. The students got to do very cool hands-on experiments. Some fun competitions and yummy prizes were given as well. They had so much fun and were really engaged in the whole session.

Art Extension

We are currently working on creating themed chalk boards. Here is the beginning of a few of the boards after a lot of planning. These are set to be completed this term!
