Principal's Message
Happy Spring Break Week!
We want to thank all of the families that attended our Family Leadership Night this month. It was a fantastic turn-out of families and students. Our students were excellent teacher leaders for the evening and the music and physical activities in the gym were great examples of the importance of Habit #7 Sharpen the Saw!
When we return from Spring Break, our state's testing (MSTEP) window begins. We have attached a document in this SMORE that shares ideas on how to help your child during testing periods. Two weeks before your child's grade level begins the MSTEP your child's teacher will send home a letter with with details of days and times of the test (5th grade and Kindergarten students letters have been sent home). We appreciate your support with the state assessment by scheduling your child's appointments or days of absence outside their testing days. Thank You!
LATE START MONDAY-- Our next late start is Monday, April 16th. Please advise we begin school two hours later that morning to allow our staff to work on required state school improvement work.
In May we will begin our process to organize classrooms for the 2018-19 school year. We take many variables into account when creating our balanced classrooms. If there is specific information you would like us to take into account about your child, beyond what you and your child's teacher have discussed, you may complete a Student Learning Placement Form. Forms will be available in the office starting April 16th. We ask that you do not request a specific teacher's name, rather you share with us the learning style that you feel best matches your child's needs.
We hope your family is able to take advantage of the extra time your child has during this Spring Break week. We have included some ideas and resources to help your family find ways to connect and enjoy your time together.
Yours in Learning,
Amie McCaw

Speaking of the Walk-A-Thon (May 4th), did you know this is the PTSO’s one, and only, fundraiser for our school? This is where the PTSO gets funds to put on events, support staff, students, indoor and outdoor facilities and the community. Our goals for the upcoming 2018/19 school year is to increase security in our school, help with the purchase of a new electronic marquee for the front of the building, and improve and repair some playground equipment and landscaping. We are looking forward to another great Walkathon!
Box Tops: Box tops are being collected by your child’s teacher until the end of the year. First place is a pizza party for the classroom!!! Second place is an ice cream party, and third place is an extra recess with Principal McCaw!!!!
Family Fare Receipts: We collect your receipts! For every $150,000 in receipts we collect, Sunset Lake will earn $1,000 from SpartanNash! Look for the bright red collection box with a Bulldog by the gym doors!

Young Artist Award Winner Elliot Wuu
Sunday, May 6, 2016 - 3pm. Vicksburg High School PAC
Tickets for this event are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $5 for students (18 and under), and $25 for families of five or more. Reservations can be made by visiting www.vicksburgcommunityschools.org/performing-arts-center or by calling the Vicksburg Performing Arts center ticket office at 321.1193.
Every two years, The Gilmore announces two new young artists and presents them with the Gilmore Young Artist Award. The award comes after an extended period of critique by a six-member panel… while the artists in question have no clue they’re being judged. The New York Times recently called The Gilmore’s selection process “the music world’s version of the MacArthur Foundation ‘genius’ grants: a prestigious prize that cannot be applied for or sought.”
Elliot Wuu began studying the piano at the age of 6. Most recently, he has accepted a full scholarship to attend The Juilliard School.
