The Hammer
Every week the Hammer is given to the Special Teams player who gets the best hit or tackle of the previous game. He carries the hammer while leading his teammates onto the field. The hammer represents attitude,tradition of hard work , sacrifice , perseverance, toughness, and relentlessness .
The "Smurf Turf"
The Boise State football field is known as The "Smurf Turf". The Smurf Turf is all blue. The "Smurf Turf" was installed in 1986. As a former junior college powerhouse heading to Division I, Boise State hoped their unique turf would bring some publicity to the school. Since the turf was installed the school has gain popularity .
Wrestlers Battle for the Coveted Border Axe
When Oregon State cut their wrestling program following the 2008-09 season, the Head coach of Oregon State started thinking about what other schools on his team’s schedule could become their rival. The rivalry started back in 2009. The winning school receives a Border "Axe". Boise and Oregon state play each other twice a year, the Border Axe is awarded to the wining school.
