Music Notes
Hello parents!
If you missed the Virtual Holiday Program, click here to view it!
Music class has been rolling along in January! Now that the Virtual Holiday Program preparation is finished, classes have been moving on to new activities.
EI/ASD - We have been singing songs from the First Steps in Music Curriculum, learning to keep a steady beat, and learning a new game called Bean Bag Balance.
PreK and K - These classes have also been singing songs from the First Steps in Music
Curriculum. We have been doing different movement activities based on Laban’s
movement themes. Many of these students have sung a solo for the class and may have brought a certificate home!
1st Grade - First graders just finished a unit learning about instruments, instrument families and timbre through activities surrounding composer Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf.
2nd Grade - These kids are just finishing a rhythmic poem writing unit. They wrote a class poem (more like a rap), made decisions to create a background track in garageband, and then we recorded students performing the rap! The finished songs are being posted on my 2nd grade google classroom! Check them out! The pictures below show some of the 2nd grade students recording their rap!
3rd Grade - They are learning all about instruments and their families. This is a long unit and will culminate in a final instrument design project! They are digging in deep to each family: strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. Ask them about what they have learned!
4th Grade - Fourth grade students are learning how to play the recorder! Though this is a challenge during Covid19, we are figuring out how to make it happen. We are learning what to do inside and then heading outside to actually play the instrument. Because of this, I may be sending recorders home soon to give kids a chance to play more often.
5th Grade - Fifth graders are continuing to go further playing the ukulele (we just learned how to play ukulele tablature) and they have also begun learning how to play bucket drums. Soon, they will be getting into their pod groups to write their own percussion/ukulele compositions and then perform them for the class.
Let me know if you have any questions!

On Friday, October 9, the USDA announced that they would be extending the Summer Food Service Program’s free meals for all students at all schools through June 30, 2021. The SFSP is a continuation of the operating rules in place during the spring/summer school closure from March-August 2020.
All complete meals (breakfast and lunch) will be served at NO COST to children 18 and under (or up through age 26 for individuals with special needs).
What comes with lunch? Lunches include protein (meat/meat alternatives), whole grains, fruit, vegetable, and milk. Students can select 3, 4, or all 5 items. The meal must contain a fruit or vegetable to qualify as a complete meal. Students will still be charged for any other purchases like: milk only, bottled water/juices, additional entrees, etc.
Families do NOT have to fill out additional paperwork to receive meals for free. Free/Reduced Meal Applications will still be collected for the purposes of Math/Reading Title I programs, as well as for discounts on athletic fees, testing fees, college application fees, etc. You can apply for meals at www.lunchapp.com.
For our remote learners, the Remote Meal pickup dates, times, and procedures will remain the same but all meals will be free. Remote Learner families will continue to receive a weekly email for ordering.
