PSSA Dates
PSSA DATES – Please note the PSSA test administration dates listed below:
April 15-17, 2019 PSSA Gr. 3, 4, 5 English Language Arts
April 29-30, 2019 PSSA Gr. 3, 4, 5 Math
May 1-2, 2019 PSSA Gr. 4 Science
Parents are asked to avoid scheduling family trips during any part of the testing window. Please be informed that I will not approve any requests for educational family trips with dates that conflict with the PSSA testing dates. Students demonstrate higher scores when they participate in the testing with their classmates instead of in a “make-up” situation. Children who do not complete the make-up testing are also counted against the entire school in determining whether Deibler Elementary is meeting the state mandated criteria.
As you know it is the school rule that cell phones and devices are to be turned off and in the student’s bookbag during school. This is very important during PSSA and Keystone testing. If a student is seen with a device during testing it will be confiscated and the school will contact you about ensuring that there is not a test security violation as the Department of Education requires.

Career Day
Camp Invention is Returning to Pennridge
Imaginations get their rocket fuel at Camp Invention!
Two exciting, week long summer adventures await children entering grades K-6 with activities that explore connections between science, technology, engineering, and innovation while sharpening their 21st century learning skills. Camp Invention allows children to experience real-world problem solving, creative thinking, invention, and teamwork while rotating through several fascinating modules inspired by the Inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
Week 1 runs July 8-11
Week 2 runs July 23-26
Both sessions will be at Penn Central Middle School from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Children can attend either one or both weeks, as there is no concept overlap. There is a $25 discount per week for students who register by March 22nd. Please see the 2019 Camp Invention Flyer for additional detail about this summer’s programs.
Warmer Weather is Here!
As the weather becomes warmer, please be sure your child(ren) follow the Pennridge School District Dress Code. This includes:
êAll clothes should be clean, neat, in good repair, and in good taste.
êStudents may not wear destructive clothing or footwear, (i.e., rivets, cleats, ornamental belts, etc.) which may damage school property or jeopardize the safety of the student or others.
êSlogans, expressions, and symbols must conform with the requirements of School District Policy No. 220 – Student Expression.
ê“Muscle shirts” or garments exposing the stomach, are not to be worn.
êAny attire that the administration considers to be an impediment to the quality of instruction or jeopardizes the safety of the student or others shall not be permitted.

Counselor's Corner
Seven Habits of Highly Responsible Students:
They set goals.
Goals keep kids focused on the future. That’s why they are the foundation of responsible behavior – and success in school. Help your child set goals. Ask your child:
· How much improvement would you like to see on this week’s test?
· How would you like to improve your grades this marking period?
· What are two things you would like to accomplish this school year?
· What will be needed to meet those goals?
Goals help students focus on what’s important and what’s not. If they have a vision of where they want to go, they’re more likely to get there. And students with goals find it easier to say no to irresponsible behaviors…because they are saying yes to their vision of the future.
They plan their time.
Responsible people meet their obligations – whether it’s turning in a paper on the day it is due, or having a report on the boss’s desk when it’s needed. But it takes planning. (Remember the old saying: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”)
Help your child use a big calendar to organize his time. Write down all his commitments and use the calendar to plan time for homework each day. On a day when he has soccer after school, he’ll need to study after dinner – but the next day, when he has a Scout meeting in the evening, he’ll need to study right after school.
They study every day.
Learning any subject is like building a brick wall – you do it steadily, one step at a time. Responsible students set aside time for homework or studying every day. On days when the teacher assigns no homework, have your child “assign herself.” That may be the day she reviews vocabulary words. Or she may take a few minutes to review notes.
They take notes in class.
Students who earn all good grades seem to have one thing in common – they take notes in class. They have learned that teachers will almost always spell out what they think is important (and what’s likely to be on the test).
Teach your child to take notes during class presentations. Spend time reviewing them before a test – and watch his grades go up.
To be continued… Look for the Counselor’s Corner in next month’s Deibler Dateline!
Nurse's Notes
SAFE FOOTWEAR: The warm weather is coming and soon we will see students wearing sandals. However, many playground accidents have been attributed to this type of footwear. Please be sure that your child wears sensible shoes that are well fitting so they are safe to run and play on our playground equipment. In addition, wearing socks will protect their feet from getting blisters.
ALLERGIES: Allergy season is upon us. Please medicate your child at home before school with their allergy medication so that they are comfortable during the school day. Many times students come to the health office for something to relieve their allergies; however, there is nothing in the health office to treat allergies.
FIELD TRIP MEDICATIONS: Field Trip Season will soon be upon us. Remember that the school nurse does not package or send your child’s school medication for field trips. If your child needs an asthma inhaler or their emergency medication for their allergies you will need to send this with your child. For other medication routinely given to your child the school nurse will contact you to determine whether the dose will be skipped that day or given as soon as they return to school. Thank you.
2nd GRADE PARENTS: Your child needs a dental exam for 3rd grade, we will accept any exam completed after 9/1/2018. Dental forms can be downloaded from our website and most dental office also carry them.
5th GRADE PARENTS: Your child needs a physical exam for 6th grade, we will accept any exam completed after 9/1/2018. Physical exam forms can be downloaded from our website or we will accept the physical exam completed by your physician.
