90's Fads and trends
by michael and karim
Music - Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby
A song released in 1990. This was a fad because it became very popular fast and became unpopular at the same speed.
Movies - Home Alone
This was a very popular movie made in 1990. This was a trend because this movie returned in 1992 and it became just as popular again.
Food - Cactus Cooler
In California, carbonated soft drink fans have long enjoyed a little local delicacy called Cactus Cooler. A welcome addition to any backyard barbecue, beach party, or anywhere else the blistering sun beckons you to reach for some ice-cold refreshment, the overwhelmingly sweet nectar contained in these yellow, orange and green cans has been quenching thirsts for decades. Let’s look back at this beloved beverage.
Fashion - Toughskin Jeans
Kids have the remarkable ability to destroy just about any type of clothing with ease, needing only an hour or so of vigorous play, sometimes minutes. But in the 70s, they begrudgingly met their match. Catalog moguls, Sears and Roebuck, developed a new fabric that was nearly indestructible, perking up the ears of parents everywhere. They marketed the fabric in a line of children's clothing that every kid of the era surely remembers, either fondly or with a pained expression. That’s right, we're talking about Toughskins.
Television - Animaniacs
With the overwhelming popularity of Tiny Toon Adventures in the early 90s, Warner Brothers followed up with an even crazier offering called Animaniacs. Featuring three siblings - brothers Yakko and Wakko, and their sister, Dot - plus a whole collection of other interesting characters, this Steven Spielberg produced animated series made a memorable impression on many a fan.
Toys - Beanie Babies
Perhaps the old saying, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder” is best demonstrated by the frenzy that erupted around a little group of critters known simply as Beanie Babies, some of the most coveted and collectible little creatures to hit store shelves since the Great Cabbage Patch Epidemic.
