Global Day of Play: February 2nd

From the Global School Play Day website:

February 4, 2015, was the first annual Global School Play Day for students in schools around the world. In year one, over 65,000 students participated! Over 177,000 students took part in 2016. In 2017, over 283,000 kids celebrated Global School Play Day. In 2018, over 385,000 students from 58 nations participated. Can we reach 500,000 students in 2019?

In his TEDx lecture, Peter Gray clearly argues the case that today's kids do not grow up playing and this has negatively impacted them in many ways. It's time we return the gift of play to this generation.

Oakley Park participated in GSPD for the past several year and we are excited to do so again this year. Teachers will plan specific time periods of time during the school day on February 2nd. Look for more information from your classroom teacher regarding participation in GSPD!

Parking Lot Safety Reminders

We have been made aware of concerning safety issues during arrival and dismissal. We understand the ongoing transportation changes create challenges for our families resulting in more drop off and pick ups. Our staff remains dedicated to ensuring the safety of our students (and their families) during the arrival and dismissal period.

We are activity working to make the process as smooth and safe as possible. Stay tuned for a BIG change in our parking lot procedures as we will be adding a second lane for those using Owl Pick Up (this practice had become pretty common at places like McDonalds, car washes, etc). More specific information will be send before we implement this change!

Cell phone use (phone calls, texting, etc) can can quickly take our attention away from what is most important...the SAFETY of our children and one another. PLEASE REFRIAN FROM CELL PHONE USE DURING ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL.

Also, turning left out of the parking is VERY difficult due to the high traffic volume on Oakley Park Road. We urge drivers to consider turning right. PLEASE DO NOT block the drop off lane waiting to merge into the left lane.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to join our January meeting. We are looking forward to a wonderful second half of the school year. Our next general meeting will be on Monday, March 7.

Family BINGO

Our annual Family Bingo event will return this year, virtually! Similar to last year, after registration a bingo kit will be sent home with your child and we will gather via zoom on THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10 for a fun evening together. Look for more information to come home this week.

2022-23 positions

We are looking for parents who want to get more involved with their child’s elementary experience to join the PTA in a leadership role. There are a variety of options open, please take a look at OakleyParkPTA.com/positions

Our goal is to foster responsible behavior in our students. If your child fails to bring home books or materials needed for homework assignments, please do not bring him or her back to school without first contacting the teacher or principal for advice. Encourage your child to do some problem solving: they could call a friend, check the class website or other internet resources. To ensure the safety and security of the students in Prime Time, the staff is not able to allow parents/students into the building though the Prime Time doors. Finally, we have one custodian who is responsible for cleaning and preparing the building for the next school day. Please sensitive to their work responsibilities and do not ask them to unlock classroom doors.


WATCH D.O.G.S. Re-Launch Meeting

In the fall of 2019 we launched the WATCH D.O.G.S.® (Dads Of Great Students) Program. We are thrilled to invite all dads, step-dad, grandpas, uncles and any other "father figures" to join us to learn more about our WATCH D.O.G.S.® (Dads Of Great Students) as we re-launch this program! We are hopeful many of our WATCH D.O.G.S who were previously volunteering will join us too!

What is WATCH D.O.G.S.®? Watch D.O.G.S is an innovative program being used by schools across America which helps them to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of fathers and father-figures in their student’s life.

Our goal is to have you spend at least one day this year at the school to be a positive male role model and to provide an extra set of eyes and ears. We are hoping our D.O.G.S can support during recesses (both lunch and block recess) as well as during our arrival and dismissal times.

Dads, granddads, uncles, step-dads and adult brothers . . . this is a great opportunity for you connect with your students in the school setting!

Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an updated set of procedures regarding COVID-19 isolation periods. Last week, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) supported the CDC guidelines related to adjusting the isolation periods in K-12 schools.

To summarize, the isolation period for asymptomatic, COVID positive students and staff is now 5 days, provided the individual remains symptom free (day “0” is the day the test was taken for those without symptoms).

The isolation period for symptomatic individuals is 5 days IF after 5 days the individual is symptom free or symptoms are improving. If symptoms are not improving, please continue to stay home until that criteria is met (day “0” is the date of symptom onset).

The rest of the guidance coincides with the practices WLCSD is already utilizing to safely operate our schools for in person instruction during the 2021-2022 school year. We will continue to work with our local and state officials on best practices moving forward.

Winter Weather Recess Reminders

We closely monitor the temperatures throughout the day and if the combined temperature/wind chill "feels like" is 0 (or below) we will hold indoor recess. PLEASE send your child prepared for outside play EVERY DAY!

● If your family needs financial assistance to purchase winter weather items, please contact Mrs. Froning or your child's teacher. We are happy to help!

● Please label all clothing with your child’s name.

Schools of Choice Information for 2022-2023

The 2022-23 window for Schools of Choice will run from January 17, 2022, to February 6, 2022.

More SOC information including the application will be updated on the district webpage: https://wlcsd.org/parents/enrollment/schools-of-choice/ soon. Please check the website during the application window and reach out to our Enrollment Department with any questions.

iReady Diagnostic #2

All students will be taking the second iReady Diagnostic in the coming weeks. Teachers will be scheduling testing sessions sometime between Monday, January 10 - Friday, February 11.

As classes complete both the Reading and Math diagnostics, parent reports will be sent home for your information. We use information from each diagnostic along with classroom assessments, assignments and observations to determine how to best continue planning instruction to support your students growth. Please contact your child's teacher if you have specific questions about iReady.

What is the i-Ready Diagnostic? The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjust its questions for each student. As a student answers correctly, the questions get more difficult. As a student answers incorrectly, the questions get easier. This adaptability allows the i-Ready Diagnostic to identify the strengths and opportunities for growth of each student.

Why is my student taking it? The purpose of the i-Ready Diagnostic is not to give your student a grade, but instead to determine how best to support their learning. It will help your student’s teacher(s) determine their needs, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the year.

Daily Health Checks

We continue to urge all families to check your child's health daily and make decisions that will keep our community healthy and safe. Please check for the following symptoms:

  • Fever/Chills
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Headache Sore throat
  • Congestion
  • Runny Nose
  • Nausea or Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Muscle of Body Aches
  • New loss of smell or taste

If your child has any of these symptoms, please err on the side of caution and keep them home until their symptoms subside. We appreciate your partnership as we continue to work together to keep our community healthy and safe! Health and Safe!

UPDATED: Mask Reminder

Due to the OCHD mandate, the following protocols are required:

  • Masks are required in all of our schools and facilities.
  • Masks are required on our buses.
  • Masks are not required outside (ex. recess).
  • Masks are not required while eating or drinking.
  • Mask Breaks: Please note that teachers will take their classes outside for periodic mask breaks throughout the school day.

Water Bottles: Please remember to send your child to school with a reusable, plastic water bottle. Our drinking fountains are closed. Refilling stations are still open.
