WORD OF THE WEEK - "Patriotism"
A person demonstrates patriotism by showing love and respect for his or her country.
“I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.” -- Nathan Hale
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) is coming in April. It is replacing Scantron as the state's summative assessment tool. We are already making plans to introduce our students to the online testing tools necessary to take the assessment. Students would benefit from having a USB mouse for the assessment if they typically use one when using their Chromebook. It's not required but it would be a plus for some students.
The 7th and 8th grade Kindness Club is collecting NEW stuffed animals for children who visit Children's Hospital Intervention and Prevention Services (CHIPS) Center. CHIPS promotes health and healing for those affected by suspected child abuse and neglect. When children visit CHIPS, they receive a stuffed animal to help them cope. The Kindness Club greatly appreciates your donation of a NEW stuffed animal! Please place your donation in bins located on each grade level floor. The stuffed animal collection will run from Friday, February 14th to Friday, February 28th!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
- Every school day in February, our students will read quotes made by prominent figures in Black History, during morning announcements.
- Our students will have the opportunity to learn more about black trailblazers in Alabama while participating in some friendly competition with Bumpus' Black History Month contest.
- Teachers will be integrating content related to Black History Month in their daily lessons.
- On February 27th we will have various speakers at Bumpus who will provide impactful learning experiences for our students.
ERIN'S LAW - Erin's Law lessons will be taught to the 7th grade on Thursday, February 20.
Attention All Parents: To comply with Erin’s Law, HCS school counselors and administrators have created a plan to provide basic child sexual abuse prevention lessons for students. We have prepared a brief video that outlines plans for elementary, middle and high school levels. You will find more detailed information on HCS’s plan to implement Erin’s Law, including the option for your child to opt out of these lessons if you so choose. This information is also available in Spanish. Disclaimer: If you need alternate accommodations in accessing the video content, please contact Marley Stephens at mstephens@hoover.k12.al.us.

WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD RETURN TO SCHOOL?
Dear Bumpus parents:
We are asking you to assist us with the appropriate time for your child to return to school. Please review the following guidelines:
1. Fever: Your child should stay home if he/she has a fever of 100 degrees (orally) or more and should remain home for 24 hours after the fever has gone---without the assistance of Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, etc.
2. Vomiting or Diarrhea: Your child should stay home if he/she has vomited or has diarrhea (more than 1 loose stool) within 2 hours prior to the start of school. They must have eaten and tolerated at least 1 normal meal before returning to school.
3. Strep Throat: If you child has been diagnosed as having strep throat (this requires a special test by your doctor), your child should stay home 24 hours after antibiotic therapy has been started.
Our goal is to keep the entire school population as healthy as possible. Together we can accomplish this goal.
You may report any cases of doctor diagnosed flu by contacting the health room at 205-439-2230 or emailing Nurse Schmith at mschmith@hoover.k12.al.us
SCOLIOLIS SCREENING - February 19th
The Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama Department of Public Health require that school districts in Alabama offer and provide scoliosis screening for male and female students in grades 5 through 9. Screening is performed by observing the uncovered spine, viewing the student from the back, side and from and also with the student bending forward. If a spinal problem in suspected, the child will be rechecked at a second screening. Parents of any student found to have signs of possible spinal abnormality will be asked to see their own physicians for further evaluation.
On February 19th girls and boys will be screened separately to ensure privacy. They can wear gym clothes, bathing suits or other clothing that may be removed easily. Screening for your child will take place within the next two weeks. If your child is currently under treatment for a spinal deformity, please let us know and your child will be exempt from the screening process.
Please complete the consent form below indicating your wishes for screening. Hard copies are also available in the health room.
