What would happen first to new prisoners when the arrived at the camp was called Selektion. When they moved off the trains, doctors would judge whether they should live or die. Those that were fit for work were ordered to move to one side and those unfit for work were killed in gas chambers. Judy Altman came with her family and were judged by Dr.Mengele for selektion. She was only 17 at the time. Judy and her mother, sister, niece, aunt, and three younger cousins were in one line while her father, nephew, uncle, and brother-in-law were in the other line. Judy and her niece were sent to the left while the rest of her family was sent to the right. She saw her mother fainting and falling down so she went over to help her mother. Mengele saw this, and grabbed her and threw her to the left, and put his hand on her head just like he did to bless the children every Friday night. “Judy, you will live”, he said. She thought of him for comfort.

Twins

Mengele was obsessive and fanatical about drawing blood from twins, especially identical twins. One night he gathered 14 gypsy twins and injected chloroform into their hearts, killing them instantly. He then dissected each of them while taking notes on every piece of their body. He supervised an operation where two gypsy twins were sewn together to create siamese twins.

Strangely, twins that went through the experiments remember him as a kind and gentle man who befriended them and gave them chocolates. Since many of the children were separated from their families right after entering the camp he was seen as a fatherly figure. Several of the older children saw it as deception. Of course, there was still tension that they could be killed at any time.
