Principal's Note...
Wow! This week's newsletter is chock full of info! Rumor has it that nice, Springtime weather is about to pop on Cape Ann...we are more than ready for that change!
Earlier this week, we had our grade K and 1 Springtime concert and the students were as cute and talented as you could imagine! We tried a different format where all of our students had the opportunity to enjoy the show from the audience. The round of applause at the end made the handful of logistical challenges well worth it!
Be sure to check out the information about "Hit the Street for Little Feet" which is our annual road race and fitness festival. It is taking place at Masconomo Park on May 19th this year!
Have a great weekend!
Best,
John
STEM DAY - A Reward in Mrs. Natiza's Room
1. We tested how quickly water dissolved the candy coating on skittle. Students first designed the perimeter of a plate with skittles and then poured water in the plate. They watched as the candy coating dissolved and the colors pulled into the middle of the plate. Some even kept their plates on their desk for over an hour and we observed how the skittles continued to dissolve in the water. So cool!
2. We also placed white flowers in red colored water and have been observing how the colored water travels through the structures of the flower (no pictures sorry!)
3. Our last experiment is still going on and is requiring a lot of patience. We are making rubber eggs! We placed eggs in vinegar and have been watching the chemical reaction occur over the past few days. After about a week the shell of the egg will be completely gone and the membrane will be rubberized enough that we can test it out and answer other questions. Some questions we will be asking will be, can light permeate through the rubber egg? Does the rubber egg bounce? This has been a really fun experiment to watch!

Raising Resilient Children and Adolescents
Join us as we welcome Dr. Robert Brooks, Ph.D. a Harvard Medical School faculty member and author of fourteen books, who will outline an approach to help children and adolescents deal more effectively with stress and pressure, in order to become more resilient.
In his presentation, Dr. Brooks will highlight factors that help children and teens deal more effectively with challenges in today’s stress-filled world. He will describe (a) why some youngsters from birth have a more difficult time developing resilience than others, (b) the importance of identifying and reinforcing each child’s “islands of competence,” and (c) specific strategies for nurturing caring, responsibility, hope, and resilience in our children and teens.

Help Wanted!
We are currently searching to bolster our substitute pool for the 17-18 school year. Many of our favorite substitutes have secured full-time jobs recently (hooray for them), and we need to "restock our bullpen." Do you know someone locally who has experience working with children in a school setting? Please have them email Mrs. Dodge directly at dodgec@mersd.org and we can take them through the application and screening process. Thanks so much in advance!
