Coming up...
Important Dates in Term 4
A warm KTS welcome to Jingheng and Isabella, who started in Room 3 this week.
We hope you gained further insight into your child’s learning achievements at the end of last week. Please do not forget to comment to earn house points. Thank you also to those who completed the community survey. We will be looking at this information at the next Board meeting and will send out a summary not long after that.
The Board elections have one more week to run - have you voted yet?
For those of you who live close to the school, we apologise for the 5.00am fire alarm on Sunday – it was certainly a busy place with two fire engines in attendance. Thankfully it was not a real fire but a failed smoke sensor in one of the classroom ceilings. This was replaced on Sunday.
We have a number of students who have represented the school, or who are due to do so in the next few days. It is certainly nice to be back to normal in this regard. Well done to our intermediate Mathex teams for their performance in the competition last Thursday. We have the year 7 and 8 cross-country zone competition on Wednesday as well as our Lit Quiz teams competing. There are a number of year 5 and 6 netballers in the zone competition on Thursday along with teams in the year 7 & 8 EPro8 competition on Thursday evening. The speech finals are on Friday … and just when you thought that was enough, there are five Jump Jam teams competing on Sunday. Thank you to the staff who have spent time training the various teams and to you for your efforts in getting students to practices and to these events.
We have a number of students who are bringing personal digital devices including smart watches etc. to school. As per the school policy, we do not recommend students bring digital devices to school. As a school we provide devices for students to use as and when required, and in Years 5 – 8 a student can bring their own Macbook/Chromebook if they have a signed BYOD agreement.
Please check the Personal Digital Devices policy online (username: kohia, password: passion) or refer to the excerpt below:
As we look forward to the official start of spring on Thursday, we are pleased to report we are maintaining our run of no COVID cases in the school. Thank you again for your caution in keeping unwell children at home. We are still encouraging mask use and are maintaining our cleaning regimen.
It is clear that we are doing really well and I am confident that we will be able to re-introduce whole-school events such as assembly in term 4.
Enjoy this gorgeous spring weather – Alison
Speeches
Students in years 4–8 have been writing and delivering oral presentations over recent weeks. This task involves many important aspects of the writing process: planning, creating, editing and proofing, presenting. Those students who deliver a high-quality piece will be invited to participate in the speech finals on Friday; two invited guests will judge the competition. This has been a ‘first’ for many year groups due to the Covid disruption; they have risen to the challenge perfectly.
Jump Jam
This year we have five teams competing in the Auckland Central Jump Jam Competition. The children have been working very hard on their routines and are excited to perform.
The competition will be held on Sunday 4th September at Pt Chevalier Primary School and parents can buy tickets here: https://www.trybooking.com/nz/events/landing?eid=7313
House week
The student leaders have been busy planning house week in week 7. Each house has a day to come together and celebrate, as follows:
Monday: Hillary
Tuesday: Sheppard
Wednesday: Te Kanawa
Thursday: Snell
Students may wear house T-shirts or house colours on their given day – parades, planting and parachutes are all in the planning. On Friday we will complete the week with a Teddy Bear’s picnic day – bring your favourite soft toy and vote for the names of our friendly house bears.
Out-of-zone enrolments for 2023
Kohia Terrace School will be holding a Ballot on Wednesday 19th October 2022 for out-of-zone enrolments. The Board has determined that places are likely to be available for out-of-zone students for Priority 2–6 in the following year levels: Year 0 (children who will turn 5 on or after 1 June 2023); Year 1, Year 2 and Year 7.
The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone.
The closing date for out-of-zone applications will be Wednesday 28th September 2022.
Parents of students who live within the home zone should also enrol by this date to assist the school to plan appropriately for next year. Please refer to our school website for further information.

Term 3 Samosa Sale – Samosas are back by popular demand! We've been told the freezer stockpiles are getting low, so we're doing one more round of samosa sales for the year. Orders are now open on Kindo, or you can pop into the office to place your order. Sales close on Monday 19th. Pick up will be Friday 23rd of September.
Jesters Pie Day – Thursday 15 September. Order on Kindo from 6 September.
School Disco – Thursday 29 September. We are very excited to be able to put on a disco for the children this year. This will be an outdoor one in the junior area. Imagine kids dancing under the trees lit with fairy lights and an opportunity for parents to connect. A huge thanks to the Mistry family for their help with the sound system.
Music Bingo Night – October 29th
Save the date and book your babysitter for our big parent event for 2022! This year we will be hosting a Musical Bingo evening – think music clips, singalongs, spot prizes and lots of dancing. Tickets can be purchased individually ($40pp) and we can help organise a table for you OR if you book and pay for a full table of 8 people there is a discounted rate of $300. So, start getting your team and costumes together, tickets will go on sale soon.
We are still seeking donations to be used for our live auction and prizes on the night. This could include vouchers, products or even a holiday at your family bach. If you or a business you know is able to contribute, please contact Becca in the office or Tina at tinajerabek@hotmail.com.
