AVID Juniors Tour Six Campuses During Annual College Road Trip
In February, AVID students embarked on the third annual Foothill AVID College Road Trip. After an early morning departure from FHS, students were treated to college tours at six major universities in California. At UC Santa Barbara, our AVID juniors enjoyed a campus tour and presentation from representatives from EOP (Education Opportunity Program). From there, we visited Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and learned firsthand from campus ambassadors what it means to students to truly "learn by doing." UC Santa Cruz offered jaw dropping views of the Pacific, but it still didn't distract any of us from the inspiring message shared by the EOP students to volunteered to spend the morning with us. By the time we reached San Jose State and San Francisco State, we were ready for a beautiful afternoon at these urban campuses - a stark contrast to the incredible redwoods at Santa Cruz. And, on our final day of touring, we were treated to a special tour of UC Berkeley provided by our own FHS alumna Abby Scott. Somewhere in between all these tours, our AVID students were able to experience and witness firsthand what each unique campus has to offer. A trip to northern California wouldn't be complete without some time spent enjoying the city of San Francisco, so we made time to stop for dinner on Fisherman's Wharf and took in the beautiful the nighttime skyline from Treasure Island. It was a whirlwind of a college tour road trip, but in the end, memories were made and college dreams came into clear focus for all.

How Instruction and Technology Are Making a Difference at Foothill HS
Sophomores Tackle a Challenging Text
This month, sophomores across Foothill are reading William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies.” A number of sophomore teachers—including Mr. Hershberger, whose classroom is shown here—increase student engagement by creating dynamic interactive learning environments. Many 10th grade students will find themselves in the same situation (well, somewhat the same situation) as the characters in the book. Over the course of the novel unit, students compete against each other in tribes as they perform academic tasks based on close readings of a complex text and 21st century collaborative learning experiences—all while watching out for mysterious beasties in the undergrowth!
Talented Brothers and Knights!
February 24th is Mexican Flag Day, a national holiday in Mexico. In honor of Mexican Flag Day, artists, dancers, vendors, political representatives, and many more from throughout our community gathered to celebrate this weekend in Santa Ana. Los Hermanos Pérez, a musical group spearheaded by two Foothill Students, was invited to play for a crowd of about 200 people. The group showcases the musical talents of Jovanny Perez on the accordion and his older brother, Jonathan Perez, on the guitar and lead vocals. Their instruments and voices filled the streets with sounds of traditional music from Mexico and brought happiness and pride to all!
Look for Los Hermanos Pérez during Foothill's Battle of the Bands in June!
