The Overthrow of A Nation
Taking over the kingdom of Hawaii
Thesis
President Harrison, President Cleveland, and Minister John Steven caused the annexation of The Hawaiian Kingdom on January 17, 1893.
President Benjamin Harrison
President Benjamin Harrison was the President during Kalakaua's reign on the Hawaiian Islands. Harrison created the Reciprocity Treaty in 1876. This treaty made it so that Hawaii wouldn't be charged a tariff or a tax on any sugar being transported into the United States. In 1887 the Reciprocity Treaty was to be renewed, the treaty had the same conditions but the United States would only renew the treaty if they were allowed to annexed Pearl Harbor to the United States. When Kalakaua wouldn't give up Pearl Harbor soldiers come and threaten to kill him if he doesn't sign. At the end of the day he signs the Bayonet Constitution. The Bayonet Constitution gave power to Kalakaua's cabinet who was filled with American foreigners. Signing this meant that Pearl Harbor no longer belong to Hawaii. Later President Benjamin Harrison introduced the treaty of annexation to annex Hawaii to the United States.
President Grover Cleveland
President Grover Cleveland stated that the annexation of Hawaii was an act of war. Cleveland wanted to help return the throne back to Queen Liliuokalani and help the Hawaiian people. President Grover Cleveland then send Secretary Blount to investigate. Blount wrote a 1,400 page document saying that the annexation and overthrow of Hawaii was illegal and unlawful. Cleveland ordered to return Hawaii to Queen Liliuokalani and that they lower the flag. The Committee of Safety lowered the flag but doesn't give the throne back to the queen. They said that if Cleveland wants them to give back the throne, he would have to force them and send troops to kill them. President Grover Cleveland then does nothing and by doing nothing he helped the United States overthrow the Hawaiian Kingdom, which is the opposite of what he wanted. He wanted to help save the Hawaiian people but by doing nothing he helped the U.S. annex Hawaii.
Minister John L. Stevens
The role of U.S. Minister John L. Stevens in the overthrow of the Hawaiian Islands was that he was assigned to Hawaii and represented the United States in all matters and Political representation of the United States. Stevens supported the Committee of Safety and the Overthrow of the Hawaiians, He was racist towards the Hawaiians. He thought that they were child-like, unfit to rule, and semi-barbaric. The Committee of Safety speaks to Steven about Coup D Tat and Steven supports it. Coup D Tat was the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani. In the plan to overthrow the Queen, Minister John L. Stevens then sends troops to march to Downtown Honolulu. Those soldiers threaten the Queen to surrender or they will kill the Hawaiian people. The Queen didn't want any of her people to get killed. The Queen surrenders her throne to the U.S. but she never surrendered to the Provisional government.
Is Hawaii legally and lawfully a state of the union?
Hawaii is not legally and lawfully a state of the union. In order for Hawaii to be legally and lawfully a state of the union, there needs to be a treaty of annexation that states that both parties agree to the overthrow. Although people believe that such a treaty exists, it does not. Therefore Hawaii was not legally and lawfully made a state of the Union. Hawaii was illegally and unlawfully taken away from the Hawaiian people.
