Students having maintained honor roll status for the entire first semester will be invited to attend an after school social on Thursday, January 25 from 2:40-4:00. Students with permission to attend will rotate through stations consisting of a movie and outside fun. A snack will be provided, but concessions will also be available for purchase. Please send money in an envelope or baggie with your child's name, if you are sending funds for concessions. Transportation home will not be provided by the school, so all students must be picked up in the car line beginning at 4:00. Please have your car rider placard visible in the dash of your vehicle when picking up your student. If you need an additional placard, please send a note in your child's folder. We are looking forward to celebrating with these academic all-stars!

Academic Rallies - Friday, Jan. 26

We will celebrate student success from the second term on Friday, January 26. Academic rallies will be held at the times listed below. Parents are welcome to attend, but please be respectful of the academic day and leave your child at school following the rally. Activities are canceled for this day in an effort to protect instructional time. Clubs will be held from 1:45-2:30, so students will not want to miss the remainder of the day. Flu Season

Flu season is in full effect. Many of our families have been affected by the flu, strep, or other illness. Although we want your child at school everyday, if he/she has a fever, it is important that it is not spread to other children. A reminder that the PCSD policy states students must be "fever free for 24 hours". Please remind your children to wash their hands and practice proper coughing/sneezing etiquette.

Attendance Data

Our goal is to meet or exceed 95% attendance each month. Below you will see a percentage breakdown for each grade level. Congratulations to fourth grade students for having the highest attendance rate for the month of December!

Fifth Grade House System

Big image
Our fifth grade students have implemented the "House System" for the next semester! Similar to the Ron Clark Academy, students are divided up into teams. Together, they work to complete weekly challenges in regard to their grades, attendance, behavior, and iReady goals. Points are also awarded in the classroom for a variety of reasons ranging from participation to showing kindness toward others. Other teachers on campus are also able to recognize students for positive behavior and award points for the entire team. Students have been given a colored wristband to show their team affiliation. There is a great deal of research behind collaborative learning and positive peer motivation. We are excited to pilot this system of support for our students!

Welcome, New Teachers!

We have welcomed a few new faces to our DES Dive Team. Mrs. Vivian McCorkle has joined our special education team along with Ms. Jennifer Ancalade as a special education assistant. Mrs. Lauren Lewis has rejoined our staffulty and will be providing case management support as well as speech services. Welcome aboard, ladies!
