Success in Sixth Grade
Volume 9, Issue 4
A Note from Mr. Nakano
"Sometimes the questions are complicated, but the answers are simple." - Dr. Seuss
"If there is no struggle, there is no progress." - Frederick Douglass
It was wonderful being able to share your child's successes and set forth goals to lead them for the year. We'll continue to use the learning targets to evaluate and assess our goals throughout the year, making adjustments as necessary.

Math
Unit Tests
Unit tests carry the same weight as quizzes (30% of their final grade). After we reassess their learning targets, those targets that are not yet mastered at the end of the unit will continue to be retaught and assessed throughout the year until mastery.
For additional review, the students can practiced unused problems from their textbook or check out this website for review videos:

Orange County Math Circle Thanksgiving Tournament
Mrs. Ahmed (Rahma's mom) is still interested in putting together a team for the Orange County Math Circle Thanksgiving Tournament. If your child is interested, please e-mail her at saquibajahmed7@gmail.com Forwarded information: The Orange County Math Circle welcomes you to participate in its 2016 Thanksgiving Tournament! The tournament will be held at St. Margaret's Episcopal School on Saturday, November 5th from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM. It is a great opportunity for third to sixth graders to engage in a friendly but rigorous contest of mathematical skill. We are very excited about this event, and hope to see you there!
The competition will consist of an individual round, team round, and an activity round. Teams may be formed beforehand, and will consist of up to six people from the same grade. If participants do not have a team, they will be placed onto a team on the day of the tournament. Students are advised to bring pencils, erasers, scratch paper, and other test items. Calculators are not permitted. We will also be having a bake sale to help raise funds for future tournaments so some money to buy snacks is advised.
Registration will be closed either on October 21 or when the 200 student registration limit is reached. The waitlist can be found here. Here is a schedule of what the day will be like: We will also be hosting our annual Toy Drive this year to help children in need enjoy a merry holiday season. Please consider bringing a new, packaged, but unwrapped gift valued at $5-$20 to the Thanksgiving Tournament. Your generosity will warm a child's heart this Christmas! For more information, please visit the tournament page here. Thank you for your interest. We look forward to seeing you at the Thanksgiving Tournament! Sincerely,
Natalie Yee

Global Read Aloud
PAX
We have been doing a lot with Pax as part of the Global Read Aloud. So far, we have "slow chatted" with students in Pennsylvania, Texas, and Florida, just to name a few of the states. Up next, we'll be communicating with students from different countries, some of whom are learning the English language. It will be interesting to see what elements of the story the enjoyed the most and whether or not they think Pax and Peter will reunite.

Outdoor Education
Outdoor Education is a full, four-day program where students are immersed in the "mountains" of Irvine Regional Park. They participate in hands-on experiments involving such topics as soil samples, moon crater scale measurements, and sundials.
