Message from Mr. Mitchell

Congratulations to everyone on a great 2nd trimester! As we enter the final third of the school year, we encourage everyone to take a few minutes to reflect on what has helped your student be successful this year, and what has potentially limited their success. In the third trimester, help your student make a plan about how to replicate those successes and remove the actions that are barriers. Please also continue to reach out to our staff with any assistance that we can provide as student move into their new courses. Spring is an exciting time at the high school!

Have a great weekend, and Go Bowmen!

Mr. Mitchell

Attendance Notifications

Attendance is one of the most important factors for academic success. Studies have shown that students who regularly attend school are less likely to struggle academically as they move through high school. At the same time, there are several uncontrollable factors that can make coming to school difficult, from illness, to family events, to mental health. We understand how these factors can impact a student’s attendance.

The Sherwood School District has been working on helping to inform families of their child’s attendance rates this year via electronic communications. These attendance letters are strictly informational and are automatically generated three times each trimester: at the 4 week and 8 week mark (around the time progress reports come out) and at the 12 week mark when final grades are issued. When your family receives these electronic attendance letters, there is no action required on your family’s part.

We are here to partner with you! If you feel there is any way we can support your student in their attendance, please reach out to your student’s Associate Principal, Counselor, or Dean of Students.

Sincerely,

Caitlin Everett, Josh Pratt, Mike Stead, and Katie Voss

Students are assigned to their Associate Principal as follows:

Last name A-G: Caitlin Everett, (503)825-6004, ceverett@sherwood.k12.or.us

Last name H-N: Mike Stead, (503)825-6006, mstead@sherwood.k12.or.us

Last name O-Z: Katie Voss, (503)825-6005, kvoss@sherwood.k12.or.us

Dean of Students: Josh Pratt (503)825-6016, jpratt@sherwood.k12.or.us

Excused Absence/Appointment

The best way to have a student excused for an appointment is to send a note with them at the beginning of the day. Your student will deliver the note to the attendance secretary and she will send a note to their classroom at the appropriate time to excuse them. All excused appointments require a note or phone call from a parent/guardian. As we ramp up for spring sports this is especially important for athletes because unexcused absences can affect eligibility to participate.

Homeroom

Homeroom Grades

If your student is not currently passing their Homeroom (period 8) class, it is because they need to turn in their Trimester 2 college and career assignment, which is linked at the top of their Homeroom Canvas page. If a student submits it over this weekend that will work to get their progress grade up. As a reminder, homeroom grades are not final and do not appear on transcripts until the end of the year (trimester 3 grades), and counts as their college and career credit.

Erin's Law Lessons Next Week

This coming week, we will have homeroom on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, due to our not offering Flex the first week of each Trimester. We will be doing Erin's Law lesson 3 and the first part of lesson 4. As a reminder, you can read the Erin's Law Letter to Families for information about the exact dates and content of those lessons, as well as a link to the opt out form. Students opting out of these lessons should go directly to the Community Room and attendance will taken there.
