A Word from the Principal — November 10, 2021
It is hard to believe that we are almost mid-November; fall conferences are coming up in just two weeks and tomorrow we do not have school in honor of Veteran's Day. This week, many Hollydale students learned about Veteran's Day and why we celebrate this day. As the sibling of a veteran I personally witnessed the sacrifice that they make for our country and I want to take a moment and say thank you to all our servicemen and women who work to protect our country and our freedoms.
We will see everyone back here at school on Friday, November 12th!
Jessica Ramirez
Principal

Counselor's Corner ~ Student Learn About Problem Solving
Over the past two weeks I have visited every classroom to teach students how to solve small problems on their own. First, students learned the definition of small problems - common conflicts that cause "small" feelings of annoyance, irritation or frustration. Small problems happen often to all of us from time to time, and students learned that how they respond to a small problem can either make the problem go away, or cause the problem to get bigger.
Then I introduced students to our Problem Solving Wheel, which offers 9 different strategies kids can use to solve small problems. We reviewed each strategy and then did some practicing using scenarios that students commonly experience.
Problem solving is an important skill that all children need to develop. It helps them gain confidence, improves self-esteem, and helps children learn to make good decisions. In addition, students learn that making good choices in resolving small conflicts can impact their own well-being and help them maintain positive relationships.
Below is a picture of the problem solving wheel we are using at school (the upper grade version looks a little different but has the same choices). These strategies can also be used at home! If you have a minute, ask your child to explain what they've learned about problem solving and to explain each of the possible choices.
Your child also learned that if they are experiencing a BIG problem, such as bullying or feeling unsafe, they need to tell an adult, rather than solving it on their own.
As always, if you have questions or need anything, I'm here to help!
November Character Trait - FLEXIBILITY
Every month we focus on a character trait to learn about. Teachers choose students who are exhibiting that trait and award these students with a Hero award at our assembly at the end of the month. This month we are learning about flexibility.
At school, flexibility looks like going with the flow when the schedule changes, or having flexible thinking to solve a math problem in more than one way. It could also look like being flexible to let a friend chose the game to play. Ask your student this month how they are showing flexibility!
Our grade level assembly this month will be November 17th.

The Gresham-Barlow School Board needs your input to help with the process of selecting the next superintendent of schools.
The Gresham-Barlow School Board is conducting a superintendent search to replace Dr. Katrise Perera who resigned on June 30. While the board conducts the search, James Hiu is serving as Acting Superintendent.
Your participation is essential
The school board needs your input to help with the process of selecting the next superintendent. To gather feedback, the school board is using a tool called ThoughtExchange so as many people as possible can participate. You can participate in a variety of languages including Spanish or Russian.
The School Board wants to know:
What should the new superintendent know about our District, and what important skills and qualities would help them be most successful in the role?

Attendance
Sadly, we had 122 tardy students last week! Students need to be in their classroom in their seat by 8:35am Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday's and 9:35am on Wednesdays!! Students coming in late to class is a big disturbance to teachers and classmates.
COVID and Cold & Flu Season
You can leave a message on our attendance line at any time day or night @ 503-661-6226.
If you have questions please call and ask to speak with our amazing Health Team: Jess Nguyen or Megan Clohessy.
Early Pick-up
- If you are picking up your student early from school, please ring the doorbell when you arrive, and please be ready to tell the office staff the name of your child's teacher in order for us to expedite helping you. Please be sure to have a 5-8 minute buffer prior to the time that you actually need them to leave. This will allow time for them to pack up, get instructions for their homework and make their way out. We do not have the ability to have students wait in the office; we will call them down when you arrive.
- After 2:40pm, unless it is an extreme emergency, we ask that you wait until the regular 3:05pm dismissal time.
