Brazil Today
Brazil's large size creates challenges and opportunities for the country Many Brazilians are poor, despite the large economy. Brazil is divided into four regions based on people, economy, and landscape. The Southeast is the most populated region in Brazil. It contains the largest city in Brazil, Sau Paulo, and the second largest city in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro. Rio was the capital of brazil from 1822 to 1960. The southeast is the richest region in Brazil thanks to natural resources, good soil for farming, and industry. This is also the coffee growing region of America.
The Northeast is the poorest region in Brazil. Many do not know how to read and the health care there is very poor. This region suffers from drought so farming is scarce. Though the region has difficulty attracting industry, the beaches and colonial sites attract tourists.

The interior region is a frontier land. It may also be used for farming someday. This region has little population besides Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, which was designed to develop the region.
The Amazon region covers northern Brazil. Manaus is a major port city there. These people rely on the river for transportation and communication. Some Indian camps are scattered throughout the Amazon rain forest. Logging is causing deforestation in these forests which makes tension between the Indians and the government.
