MTSS Moment

Multi-Tiered System of Supports, or MTSS, is a prevention-based framework that integrates the current district initiatives to support all students and staff. As a system, MTSS helps organize our schools to achieve outcomes through understanding data, providing a continuum of practices, and supporting staff through systems. The purpose of MTSS is to support the whole child, and Gananda Central School District began this school year by appointing a District MTSS Coordinator and MTSS coaches for all three buildings to prioritize this work. More information about MTSS to come in future newsletters!

Free Covid-19 Test Kits For February Break

We have received COVID-19 Test Kits from New York State to distribute prior to our upcoming February break. We are handling the distribution of the kits for our Prek-8 students slightly differently than our 9-12 students.

Grades PreK-8: We will send the free COVID-19 test kits home with all students in grades Pre-K through 8 on Thursday, February 17, 2022. Students will receive them from their teacher. If you DO NOT want your child to receive a test kit, fill out this form.

Grades 9-12: We will send the free COVID-19 test kits home with students, in grades 9-12, on Thursday, February 17, 2022. Test kits will only be sent home with students for whom there is a request. If you DO want your child to receive a test kit, fill out this form.

There is no requirement for you to use them; we are providing them as an added layer of protection for those that want them. In the event your student is absent on Thursday, February 17, we will distribute their test kit on Friday, February 18. One kit will be distributed per student in grades Pre-K through 12.

As a reminder, any at home positive test results should be uploaded to the Wayne County Public Health Department website at: https://hipaa.jotform.com/213433520882048.

Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) (increase heart rate)

The most common tachycardia in children is supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). It’s also called atrial tachycardia, paroxysmal atrial tachycardia (PAT) or paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT).

When a child has SVT, electrical signals in the heart’s upper chambers (atria) fire abnormally. This interferes with electrical impulses coming from the sinoatrial (SA) node, the heart’s natural pacemaker. This disruption results in a faster than normal heart rate.

SVT doesn’t pose a life-threatening problem for most children and adolescents. Treatment is only considered if episodes are prolonged or frequent. Older children are more likely to have SVT.

A child with SVT may be aware of his or her rapid heart rate, as well as other symptoms that include:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Chest discomfort
  • Upset stomach
  • Weakness

In most cases, SVT doesn’t keep a child from enjoying normal activities. Medicine may be necessary to keep the tachycardia under control.

Some children can learn ways to slow down their heart rate. For instance, the Valsalva maneuver – closing the nose and mouth and straining to breathe out – may help your child slow his or her heart rate.

AS ALWAYS - CONTACT YOUR CHILD'S PHYSICIAN FOR GUIDANCE

New Temperature for Outdoor Play

We value the importance of outdoor play for our students. With the current 25 degree cut-off our students were missing out on lots of outside recess opportunities. We recently polled some regional elementary schools and found the average cut-off temperature for 16 local schools was 21 degrees.

Therefore, beginning on Monday, February 14, our new temperature cut-off will be 20 degrees. We are hopeful this will give us more days when students can play outside.

Please be remember that outdoor play can only take place when students have appropriate clothing. Please continue to send coats, hats, mittens/gloves, snow pants, and boots with your student daily. Our website has also been updated to reflect this change.
