This week, we hosted wonderful Open Houses at Joseph Osgood Elementary School and at Deer Hill Elementary School. Thank you, Principal Farrell, Principal Sullivan, Osgood and Deer Hill educators, Cohasset Education Foundation (CEF), Parent Student Organization (PSO), families, and students for making these events wonderful showcases of all we offer our elementary students.

This week there was also a coastal sweep of our beaches by high school students, some exciting athletic contests, and great teaching and learning throughout the District.

Excessive Student Absence Notification

Massachusetts General Law Chapter 76 requires that each school notify parents and guardians if their student has five (5) or more unexcused school absences. Parents and guardians will receive a letter when their child has 5, 10, and/or 15+ days of unexcused absences. The letter will also include the number of unexcused tardies and unexcused early dismissals.

Absences will be excused under the following circumstances:

  • After a medical appointment documented with a note from the medical office

  • Illness or quarantine with a note from the appropriate medical office

  • Observance of a religious holiday

  • Bereavement or serious illness in family

  • Court appearance

  • A child may also be excused for other exceptional reasons with approval of the Principal or designee in accordance with the school committee policy and the regulations set in Chapter 76

Daily attendance is essential to a student's success. Missing a significant number of days of school has a detrimental effect on academic and social development. Therefore, each school will work with individual families to support student attendance.

Curriculum Updates

Curriculum Review Process

The Cohasset Public School District will begin a formalized five-year curriculum review cycle this year. Development of a curriculum review process is an essential component to maintaining a focus on continuous improvement of student learning. The curriculum review cycle consists of four phases:

  1. Self-Study: Analysis of the current curriculum and development of action plan
  2. Develop/Redesign: Development and revision of curriculum
  3. Implement/Monitor: Implementation and monitoring of curriculum (2 years)
  4. Evaluate: Evaluation of data/outcomes

The rationale for a Curriculum Review Process:

  • Ensures that the district has clearly articulated curriculum that is well coordinated through PreK-12
  • Provides for an ongoing review and revision of curriculum
  • Supports the ongoing use of assessment data to inform and improve curriculum and instructional practices
  • Ensures that revisions and updates to curriculum, instruction, and assessment take place to maintain adherence to changes in state and federal mandates, as well as MA Curriculum Frameworks
  • Ensures that curriculum is culturally responsive, unbiased, and inclusive
  • Outlines a planned approach towards researching and budgeting for expenditures in curricular materials and professional development
  • Evaluates potential needs for curricular or programmatic changes to support student learning

This process of curriculum design and revision is based on the process of backwards design. The foundation of backwards design of curriculum is to determine first, based on our state curriculum standards, what students will know and be able to do and clarify these expectations in a written and communicated curriculum map.

This year Math and Music/Art will be in Phase 1 of the Curriculum Review Process. Please see the Curriculum Review Calendar.

Each content area will involve the creation of a steering committee which will have representatives from district and building leadership, department chairs, and teachers PrK-12. There will be opportunities for family input throughout the process.

Curriculum Initatives

The District has several initiatives for this school year which include the roll out of the Elementary Comprehensive Literacy Approach, Deer Hill pilot of the i-Ready Personalized Learning for Math, Middle School implementation of OpenSciEd, and the District Curriculum Review Process which will focus on Middle and High School Math and Art/Music Pk-12. Dr. Raymond Porch, the Director of Diversity Equity & Inclusion for the Burlington Public Schools continued his work with the District on Friday, September 23rd at the district 1/2 day professional development. . Dr. Porch presented in the Spring of 2022 and was the keynote speaker on our first day back with staff.

Last year the District partnered with Curriculum Associates to implement the I-Ready Diagnostic in Math and ELA for students in grades K-8. The assessment is a computer-based assessment that adapts to the child's understanding of the material being assessed. For more information about the i-Ready Diagnostic please use the i-Ready Family Center. The assessment window runs from September 15 through October 5. Your child's principal or teacher will send more detailed information.

Cohasset High School Vision of the Graduate

Student Opportunity Act (SOA)

The Student Opportunity Act (SOA) implements the recommendations of the 2015 Foundation Budget Review Commission and includes other provisions to benefit our public schools.

As part of the SOA, districts are required to submit three-year, evidence-based plans aimed at closing persistent disparities in achievement among student subgroups. The District submitted the SOA Plan in January 2021 and then sent the amended plan in March 2022. Please see the presentation below.

First Responder High Five Day coming on 10/14/2022

We are excited to show our appreciation to our Police and Fire First Responders in our traditional "High Five Day," which will take place on Friday, October 14, 2022. During this event our students will have the opportunity to "high five" members of Cohasset Police & Cohasset Fire as the students enter the school buildings. We are fortunate to have such wonderful police and fire in Cohasset, and we are appreciative of everything they do to keep our schools safe. We also appreciate them taking part in this celebration.

District Curriculum Accommodation Plan (DCAP) Revised

Thank you to Director of Student Services, Barbara Cerwonka, and to all the educators who helped work on the revision of our District Curriculum Accommodation Plan (DCAP), which will be posted on the District webpage. As articulated in the DCAP, "Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 71, Section 38Q1/2 states that a school district shall adopt and implement a curriculum accommodation plan to assist principals in ensuring that all efforts have been made to meet the students' needs in regular education. The plan shall be designed to assist the regular classroom teacher in analyzing and accommodating diverse learning styles of all children in the regular education programming, including, but not limited to, direct and systematic instruction in reading and provisions of services to address the needs of children whose behavior may interfere with learning, or who do not qualify for special education services under chapter 71B. The curriculum accommodation plan shall include provisions encouraging teacher mentoring and collaboration and parental involvement."

CEF Spring Awards 2022


Financial Literacy Fair: $5925 Nicole Fitzgerald

This grant would support CHS in hosting the Credit for Life fair, an authentic learning experience promoting college and career readiness and financial literacy for all students. Student participants choose an occupation and make a variety of financial decisions, ranging from where to live and how to save for retirement to buying a television or owning a pet.” This grant will help purchase all reusable signage, supplies, and materials and cover one year of operating expenses.

Culture Workshops: $4900 Brian Scott

Ashley Bendicksen will present a keynote speech to all students, followed by a two workshops;

BYSTANDER INTERVENTION: Your Power as a Difference Maker (for all students) and SELF-ESTEEM & THE MEDIA: Mastering the Real "Selfie" Game (for girls). The goals of the project are to capitalize on two identified student strengths, trust and empathy, in order to build the capacity in students to advocate for themselves and for others.


Art: Invisible Differences: $2000 D’Alessandro/LaPanne

Specialized 3d art workshop from local artist who focuses on identifying ‘hidden’ strengths from within to celebrate our uniqueness and our differences. Students will gain an appreciation and understanding of individuality and learning difficulties while exploring creativity through art.

Math Tools: $1200 Erin Foley

This grant provides mini whiteboards and math manipulatives to encourage innovation in learning styles and to promote healthy group working. The ability to try out different approaches and erase them easily gives sharing confidence and can reduce the fear of ‘failure’. A ‘do and review’ approach develops a math mindset and reduces math anxiety in students.

Deer Hill

Modern Classroom: $22847 Kim Kurker/Lisa Radden

This grant is focused on increasing student learning engagement by creating a safe and flexible learning space for students who need a non-traditional classroom environment to thrive. The grant provides universal design furnishings, technology, sensory seating and storage and is a flexible and adaptable space for multi-functional purposes.

STEM Integration, phase 2: $1500 Suzi Corkhum

This grant partners with an outside consultant to provide teacher training to show teachers how to write and use code, as well as training them on the use of the Circuit Playground, ROOT Robotics and PyGamer components available at the school. The aim is to integrate STEM tools , technologies and principles into other areas of the curriculum and increase teacher confidence in differentiated ways to support learning standards in their subject areas.

STEAM Lab: $29940 Alex Sullivan/Lisa Radden

The STEAM Lab is ‘phase 1’ of a broader project to bring an ‘Innovation and Literacy Commons’ to Deer Hill. The lab will adjoin to a large room and will provide a range of technology, specialized furniture and technology equipment to support communication, collaboration and critical thinking skill development in class.


Computer Lab Smart Board: $7000 Lehr/O’Brien

This grant provides a mobile interactive flat panel screen for the Osgood Computer Lab to create an interactive learning environment that is equitable to all learning abilities and developmental ages.

All parent/guardians of CPS students are now able to verify and update their contact information in Aspen's Parent Portal.

The workflow is intended for a parent/guardian to electronically update (per student) the following information:

School Improvement Plans for 2022-2023

All plans and handbooks for the 2022-2023 school year were approved this past spring. Thank you to Principal Farrell, Principal Sullivan, Principal Mills, Principal Scott, and to their School Councils for this excellent work. Please see below for the approved plans, which coincide with the Strategic Objectives of the Cohasset Public Schools Strategic Plan, 2021 - 2024.

Safety is a Priority for Cohasset Public Schools

Safety is a paramount for Cohasset Public Schools. This summer, Cohasset District Leadership worked collectively with Cohasset Police, Cohasset Fire, Emergency Management, Facilities, Technology, external safety plan advisors, and School Committee Safety Subcommittee members to refine, revise, and create safety protocols. Please be aware that we will not be providing entrance to our buildings to anyone who does not present a proper license, even if we are aware of who the person is. This is a standard protocol that is necessary to ensure safety. All visitors will continue to be screened via our Raptor or Lobby Guard technology through use of their license.

  • As a District, we have developed an emergency preparedness plan for each of our buildings. These plans were created in coordination with local police, fire, and emergency management departments. We meet as a District Crisis Team each summer and periodically throughout the year to refine plans, and we are in constant collaboration and communication.

  • In conjunction with the Cohasset Police Department, our district has fully implemented the ALICE protocol as a response to any potential armed intruder. "ALICE is designed to provide comprehensive preparedness in the event of an intruder in one of our schools. The goal is to utilize infrastructure, technology, and human action to increase overall student and staff safety" (Acton-Boxborough Superintendent Message). Our staff receives annual training in this protocol from members of the Cohasset Police Department, and we supplement this training with periodic drills and scenarios to further increase our preparedness. Each school has a Crisis Team, in addition to our District Crisis Team. Currently, more than 900 schools, businesses, universities, hospitals, and municipalities have adopted the ALICE protocol. A summary of our approach can be found on the District web-site.

  • The protocols we updated this year are all available on the District Web-site under "Our District." Here are links to these important safety protocols:

In addition, we have many upgrades implemented and planned for our safety systems that were recommended as part of our recent facilities review.

The Cohasset Public School District is committed to providing a safe, positive, and productive educational environment where students can achieve the highest academic standards. No student shall be subjected to harassment, intimidation, bullying, or cyber-bullying.

"Bullying" is the repeated use by one or more students or school staff members of a written, verbal, or electronic expression, or a physical act or gesture, or any combination thereof, directed at a target that:

• causes physical or emotional harm to the target or damage to the target's property;

• places the target in reasonable fear of harm to him/herself, or of damage to his/her property;

• creates a hostile environment at school for the target;

• infringes on the rights of the target at school; or

• materially and substantially disrupts the education process or the orderly operation of a school.

"Cyber-bullying" means bullying through the use of technology or any electronic communication, which shall include, but shall not be limited to, any transfer of signs, signals, writing, images, sounds, data or intelligence of any nature transmitted in whole or in part by a: • wire • radio • electromagnetic • photo-electronic or photo-optical system, including, but not limited to, electronic mail, internet communications, instant messages or facsimile communications.

Cyber-bullying shall also include the creation of a web page or blog in which the creator assumes the identity of another person or knowingly impersonates another person as author of posted content or messages, if the creation or impersonation creates any of the conditions enumerated in the definition of bullying.

Cyber-bullying shall also include the distribution by electronic means of a communication to more than one person or the posting of material on an electronic medium that may be accessed by one or more persons, if the distribution or posting creates any of the conditions enumerated in the definition of bullying.

Bullying and cyber-bullying may occur in and out of school, during and after school hours, at home and in locations outside of the home. When bullying and cyber-bullying are alleged, the full cooperation and assistance of parents and families are expected.

Bullying is prohibited:

  • On school grounds;
  • On property immediately adjacent to school grounds;
  • At school-sponsored or school-related activities;
  • At functions or programs whether on or off school grounds;
  • At school bus stops;
  • On school buses or other vehicles owned, leased or used by the school district; or,
  • Through the use of technology or an electronic device owned, leased or used by the school district.

Bullying and cyber-bullying are prohibited at a location, activity, function or program that is not school-related or through the use of technology or an electronic device that is not owned, leased or used by the school district if the act or acts in question:

  • create a hostile environment at school for the target;
  • infringe on the rights of the target at school; and/or
  • materially and substantially disrupt the education process or the orderly operation of a school.

From Commissioner of Education Riley’s memo to Superintendents sent on August 15, 2022:

“The Commonwealth is not recommending universal mask requirements, surveillance testing of asymptomatic individuals, contact tracing, or test-to-stay testing in schools. Districts and schools are reminded that there is no longer any statewide masking mandate in schools (other than school health offices) and there is no testing requirement for schools.” We will continue to respect the right of individuals to wear masks at any time during the school day.

“Effective August 15, 2022, all students and staff in childcare, school in grades K-12, or participating in out-of-school time (OST) and recreational camp settings should follow the updated isolation and exposure guidance issued by DPH, in alignment with recently issued guidance from CDC. No asymptomatic person should be excluded from school as a result of exposure, regardless of vaccination status or exposure setting.”

School Facilities Condition Study & "Senior Study" Visit

During the 3/30/2022 Cohasset School Committee Meeting, the architectural firm Ai3 presented their Cohasset Schools Existing Conditions Study. This study, which covers all of our schools, was commissioned by our School Facilities Committee. Some of the major findings of the study are:

Overall Recommendation for Cohasset Middle School and Cohasset High School is for "Comprehensive Renovation and Addition or New Construction as Defined by the Massachusetts School Building Authority and its Core Program"

Recently, we were informed by the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) that we have been moved into the "Senior Study" phase, which will take place at the end of September. School, town, and facility officials will be attending this meeting. The following description of the Senior Study is quoted from the MSBA website.

"A Senior Study is a site visit to the school facility which the district has identified as its priority SOI. During the Senior Study, a team from the MSBA, which includes architects and engineers with many years of school facility and educational programming experience, will tour the school facility. The Senior Study seeks to examine both the physical condition of the school facility as well as programmatic issues that affect the delivery of the required educational program. Before touring the school facility, the MSBA team will briefly interview the superintendent, principal, facilities manager, and other school personnel to:

  • Identify goals for and concerns about the school facility
  • Confirm information about school building deficiencies that were stated in the SOI
  • Understand how any physical condition issues adversely impact the delivery of the educational program
  • Learn about the school district’s routine and capital maintenance programs and practices

While touring the facility, the MSBA team will:

  • Evaluate the physical condition of the facility, including major building systems (e.g., building envelope, HVAC, electrical distribution, interior finishes)
  • Assess overcrowding or capacity issues
  • Assess the ability of the facility to support the required educational program
  • Assess design factors such as availability of natural light which make a school’s environment conducive to learning
  • Examine site considerations
  • Evaluate the school district’s maintenance of the facility

The information acquired during the Senior Study will help the MSBA to determine the next steps in the process. The MSBA’s goal is to collaborate with the district to find the right-sized, most fiscally responsible and educationally appropriate solution to the facility’s problems. The Senior Study is not approval of a project. It is part of the due diligence phase of the MSBA’s new process."

Effective for the 2022-2023 school year, Cohasset Public Schools will continue to administer a fee-based transportation program. The application fee applies to students in Grades K-6 who reside less than or equal to 2 miles from their designated school, and all students in

Grades 7-12.

All students will be required to have a bus pass after September 15th. Please see our website for information on replacement badges.

Multi-Tiered System of Supports

To Parents/Guardians of Cohasset Public Schools :

The Cohasset Public Schools believes in providing the highest quality of education for our students. This letter is to provide you with information about a three-tiered instructional approach we use to meet this goal, referred to as Multi Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).

For MTSS, all students will participate in the core curriculum, with three levels (tiers) of interventions for students who demonstrate at-risk skills in general academics or behavior/social emotional areas. Each tier provides additional support beyond the core curriculum and instruction. All students receive formal and informal checks to measure their progress to determine if they are performing at an expected level. Behavioral and social emotional impacts are also monitored on a regular basis through the year.

● Tier One- As the largest tier, and the foundation for the entire framework, Tier 1 encompasses the entire school with core instruction and basic interventions. This structure helps to build positive relationships between staff and students. It includes proactive classroom strategies aimed at creating a supportive learning atmosphere. Teachers will use different strategies as universal supports within the core curriculum and instruction to address all student educational needs. These supports include but are not limited to items identified within the District Accommodation Plan (DCAP) and/or the School Accommodation Plans.

● Tier Two- Based on progress data, students who require more support than Tier One will be provided targeted interventions matched to their needs within the general classroom by the classroom teacher and/or support staff in the classroom. The Multi Tiered System of Support (MTSS) Team will track the student’s progress, and parents/guardians will receive ongoing progress data.

● Tier Three- Students who continue to require measures beyond Tier Two will receive more intensive individualized interventions at this level. Parents/guardians will be notified of these supports and receive ongoing progress data. After Tier Three implementation, students who continue to display limited progress may then be considered for further evaluation and services.

All parent/guardians of CPS students are now able to verify and update their contact information in Aspen's Family Portal. Please see the web site for more details and instructions.


For Families in Grades 6-12, your child is a member of our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program. Check out our recommended specifications to ensure that you purchase a device that will support their learning at CPS.

Follow these steps to help your child install the BYOD certificate at home:

Contact our IT Help Desk for help with your Aspen Family or Student Portal Account, a forgot/lost Cohasset K12 Google Account password, or for assistance with your child’s BYOD device.

A Message from Food Services

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to the 2022-23 school year. The Cohasset Public Schools Department of Food and Nutrition is excited to provide breakfast and lunches to all students in the district for free this year once again through the state of Massachusetts.

State officials have clarified that while school meals will be universally free for all students during SY 2022-2023, all school districts must continue to make school meal applications available to certify children for free and reduced price meals and that information may be used to qualify newly eligibly children for P-EBT.

Therefore, a new SY 2022-2023 meal household application must be filled out to qualify for these benefits.

If you already received a letter from the district do not fill out another application.

We will be sending forms out and they are also available on Please our website to fill out a SY 2022-2023 free and reduced application. Forms are available under the nutrition tab.


Step 1: Child’s full legal name and school (no nicknames)

Step 2: Number is provided on your letter – not your card

Step 3. Name and income – (Weekly, Bi –Weekly, 2x Monthly or Monthly)

If you are a seasonal employee, please enter annual income

Step 4: Last 4 digits of Social Security and Signature are REQUIRED –If not received, applications will be denied automatically and will delay approval process.

  • New form is required, status does not carry over from year to year.
  • ONE form per family. Please make sure all children are included on the form that are in your household, including those that do not attend school
  • Only one application is required. If an online application is completed, a paper application is not needed.
