Welcome Back
From the Principal's Desk
Dear Eagle Nation,
I hope that you and your families are all still well and managing to keep safe. I wanted to start by thanking you all as parents and caregivers for your fantastic support over the past few days. I am particularly appreciative for everything that you have been doing to support learning from home. With two high school aged children myself, I know how difficult it is to juggle working from home with supporting your own children with their schooling, and this is of course in addition to dealing with all of the normal challenges of family life. The school administration was able to join many of the Goggle Meets and we were very excited about what we saw. Students were logged in and actively engaged in the lessons. Thank you students for your commitment to your educational success. I would also like to thank once again all of the teaching staff who have continued to work exceptionally hard to ensure that the students are able to continue with their studies. The GW faculty and staff is the BEST in the piedmont!!
I hope that your son/daughter has continued to find accessing the work via the Google Classroom link in Canvas to be straight-forward and helpful. As said previously, although nothing can replace the impact of students being in school to receive the direct instruction and immediate feedback from their teachers, the use of the Google Classroom has enabled us to provide the students with the next best thing. With the strong possibility that home learning due to inclement weather may occur again at some point during this term, please remember to refer to Mrs. Castle's and the DPS Technology department's guidance, including some very clear and helpful video tutorials, to support students and parents in navigating the Google Classroom. This information is available via the students’ Google Classroom accounts but can also be viewed from the school website.
Also, now that we are well into the second semester, the teachers, other administrators, and I have one vision for our students and we hope it closely matches yours. We want ALL of them to become all that they can be. We want them to be successful through good, consistent attendance, perseverance, utilizing help from our faculty, and working diligently. We want this because these traits will build good habits that will carry them profitably throughout their life. We expect a great deal from them because they are so very capable of producing great results! Parents, please be aware that attendance at the high school is very important. Students must be present 90% of the time. If your child has missed 10 or more days during the first semester you should receive a letter in the mail by the end of the week. If you have questions in regards to your child’s attendance, please contact their counselor to schedule a parent meeting.
Finally, we urge you to stay involved at George Washington High School. Decades of research show that when parents are involved students have:
-Higher grades, test scores, and graduation rates
-Better school attendance
-Increased motivation, better self-esteem
-Lower rates of suspension
-Decreased use of drugs and alcohol
-Fewer instances of violent behavior
On behalf of George Washington High School, welcome back! We have missed you all so much over the past few days!
Dr. Johnnie M. Simmons
Proud Principal
