Co-Regulating with Your Child
When the brain is put under undue stress, it can alter the signals in the brain and keep it from working properly. Us therapists refer to this as "emotionally flooded." When a child is emotionally flooded, they are unable to process new information correctly. The behavior you may see is acting out or defiance. The negative behaviors are a due to the inability for the child to recognize and verbalize their uncomfortable emotions. This happens to adults, too. Your ability to plan, explain, and model for your children is impacted. To regulate is to first recognize that you are in this emotional state and to then implement a calming strategy. To co-regulate is to help your child recognize this stress and assist them in engaging in an appropriate coping strategy. The various mindfulness techniques posted in previous Counseling Corner's are options of coping strategies that can support an emotionally flooded mind.
Elementary to Middle School Transition
Parents are welcome to visit https://www.gateschili.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=11858. This is the middle school's page for parent information regarding transition information. Please see the email from Mr. Costa Tavelaris (Middle School AP) dated April 29.
Once allowed back in the building, middle school counselors will record a virtual tour of the middle school that will be made available to our current 5th grade students. As our visit to the middle school had to be cancelled, we hope that the virtual tour will provide some peace and clarity to our students.
Please contact Miss Picha or Ms. Cimato with any transition questions. We will direct your inquiry to the correct faculty member.
