Weddington Middle School Newsletter
January 10, 2020
Notes from the Principal
Dear Parents,
Happy new year! As we gear up for the final full week of our first semester, I share a few items that might prove relevant as we transition to the spring.
We have installed a new safety feature at our main school entry, and those doors remain LOCKED at all times now. Office personnel will monitor a bell system and camera to allow visitors to enter. We ask that you bring any forgotten items (homework, lunch, computers, chargers, PE clothes, etc.) prior to 10:30am. Early dismissals should occur by 3:15pm, and please remember to bring your identification. Almost any security improvement necessitates at least some inconvenience, so thank you for your patience as we continue to prioritize student safety.
Our Spring Sports Meeting takes place in the WMS Gym Monday night at 6pm, and prospective spring athletes and their parents can join us to hear from the Athletic Booster Club and spring coaches about the upcoming season.
Thursday, January 16, all 6th and 7th grade students will take North Carolina Final Exams for Social Studies or Science. On Friday, these students will transition to second semester core courses. The official start to spring semester begins after the holiday and teacher workday when students return on Wednesday, January 22.
During the final week in January, Weddington Middle School is hosting the Union County Public Schools Basketball Tournament. An exciting opportunity to showcase our school, it will bring significantly more traffic to our campus most of that week. We host four games each day on Monday (1/27), Tuesday (1/28), and Thursday (1/29), all of which will begin at 4:30pm. We are using our main entry off Deal Road AND the available parking at Weddington Elementary School off Twelve Mile Creek to accommodate spectator vehicles. Please expect and plan for additional traffic around our campus during each of these days. Championship games take place Friday (1/31) at Weddington High School.
Thanks for your support during a successful first semester, and here’s hoping we have an excellent start to the second! Have a great weekend.
Coming up next week:
Wednesday--Site Base Mtg.
Thursday--6th/7th Sci/SS NCFE testing
Friday--End of grading period
Career Day 2020 will be Friday April 24th from 8:30am-11:00am. If you know anyone interested in sharing their career with our middle school students, please share the sign-up link below. The Career Day Information for Presenters link has a video that outlines answers to frequently asked questions by our presenters. If you know anyone who is interested that doesn’t live in the area, we are also able to setup video conferencing. Mr. Vreeland’s son presented for us last year from California, and it was a great experience. We are also able to accommodate a speaker if they are only available for one or two sessions, we just need to know up front.
Please let us know if you have any questions, and thanks for your help in recruiting for career day 2020!

Absence/Early Dismissal
Parents, if your child will be leaving school early, please send a note to the homeroom teacher with the dismissal time. Students who leave before or arrive after 12:15 pm will be marked absent for the day. There are no dismissals allowed after 3:30 pm. If you send a note for your student to be in the office at 3:15 pm and you arrive after the 3:15 pm deadline, if your student is not in the office waiting for you the office staff will not call your student out of class. Also, all early dismissal and late arrivals from medical appointments must have a note from the doctor in order to be excused.
When students are absent it is not necessary to call the school. Be sure to send a note to the homeroom teacher stating why the student was not in school. UCPS will notify you through Connect-Ed if your student was
absent.
