In the Classroom... 9/29/17
This week we focused on adjectives in writing and in reading. Our Book of the Week was Go Away Big Green Monster. The kids loved this story and creating their own big green monster. They worked to describe their monsters through writing and we talked a lot about how adjectives help us describe characters and settings within the books we read. We had a blast today as we celebrated pumpkin day and extended our understanding of this. Many thanks to the Williams & Parr family for helping provide pumpkins and pies for this fun day. The kids loved using their 5 senses to explore the pumpkins and to use adjectives to describe them. Scroll down to watch our Pumpkin Day video (under the Notes section... be sure to watch it past the credits). Ask your child what an adjective is. They should be able to tell you =).
I have to give the kids a shout out... they are quite the subtraction experts and most can relate it to addition by creating both equations for our math problems. I am truly impressed with how well they did with this. We will focus some more on mystery addends next week.
We wrapped up our Science unit on Earth/Moon/Sun this week and boy did we have a blast. We sang an awesome song that helped us better understand why we have day and night and then we visited a school in Japan (virtually) to compare our school days. The kids were shocked to discover that when we have day they have night over there. We used a flashlight on our globe to help visualize the change from day to night and we discussed time zones. We really had a fun with this unit. Our next unit will be Balance & Motion.
For second quarter we will be switching from citizenship to cultures which is one of my favorite units to teach. Next week info will go home about your child's first project. They will be researching and putting together a project on a different country and we travel virtually to these places to learn about their celebrations, foods, language, etc. Don't worry projects will not be due till after Thanksgiving. There will be plenty of time to work on them and we will also help the kids gather some info at school that they can use at home as they put together this project. I always encourage families to work together on projects. It makes for great family time and learning for all. Again, more info will come home on Monday.
Next week is Apple Week. We will be traveling to the NC mountains virtually each day to learn more about the Apple Orchard at Altapass and discovering information about apples and its life cycle. We are looking for some parents to send in some apples if possible. We need 3 different types of apples. Usually we try Red Delicious & Granny Smith, but the third can be any variety. We would also love 2 tubs of caramel to dip our apples in. Let me know if you can help.
Below this section will be a sign up link for our Fall Party. Mrs. Rice and Mrs. Caesar have worked hard to plan an awesome experience for the kids. They've purchased supplies for the activities and need your help with the refreshments. We are asking that each parent send in $3.00 to help reimburse them for the materials they've purchased and to sign up to help send in the food. Please take a look at the sign up genius and sign up to bring whatever you can. We truly appreciate your help! Our Fall Party will be on Friday, Oct. 13 at 10:30. You are all invited to come. It's a great way to meet other parents and to have a little fun with your kids at school. I hope to see you guys there. It's going to be so much fun!
I hope each of you enjoys your weekend. Thanks for all you do to support me and your awesome kids!

- Readvolution- The Carolina Hurricanes has teamed up with Wake County schools to encourage reading. Information on this came home in your child's Friday Folder. Readvolution challenges Wake County's 114 elementary schools to each read 2,020 books collectively between Oct. 2 and Jan. 12, 2018. It also asks that individual students read at least 20 minutes outside the classroom each weekday during the same time frame. As they reach their goals, students and teachers will be rewarded with free tickets to Hurricanes games, school appearances from Stormy and the Storm Squad, individual recognition and more. It's pretty exciting. Your child will have to login his/her reading for this. The username is your child's school Google login and his/her lunch number is the password. You can find this info on the back of your child's Homework Folder. I hope that you will participate as it will be fun way to encourage reading. Let me know if you have any questions or need help getting logged in.
- Awards Rally- Parents whose child will be receiving an award at the rally have been notified through email. The rally is on Oct. 13 at 1:20 in the gym.
- Report Cards- These will go home on Friday the 13th.
