The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of December 17 - 21!
Message from the principal
As we approach the end of the first semester, I wanted to highlight important information about second semester schedules as well as information as we end our first semester.
The following message about second semester schedules was shared with students last week:
"There are tweaks still being made to the master schedule at this time so it is possible some schedules will change prior to the start of the semester. We hope to change schedules as little as possible. Please view your schedule to make sure the right courses appear for second semester.
- Students need to make sure they are scheduled for the required/core classes they requested (PE, math, English, social studies, science, resource, ESL). If a student is not scheduled for a required/core class we can add that.
- Students need to make sure all 8 periods appear on their schedule. If this is not the case, please let a counselor know.
- Requests for switching teachers will be not honored.
- Requests for switching periods within the same class will not be honored.
- Students can drop a course to add a learning center if they do not already have a daily learning center.
- It is possible that a student could have a different teacher than he/she has this semester for any of his/her classes due to scheduling conflicts.
- The last date to submit a schedule change form is Tuesday, Dec 18th by 3:30. A schedule change form must be filled out. This form must be signed by a parent before that time. If the counselor is not present please leave it in their respective mailbox."
Our Winter Recess will be December 24 through January 4th. We will not have school during these two weeks. I hope that it is a restful time for students
When we return to school on Monday, January 7th, it will be a Day 2.
First semester finals will be January 14, 15, and 16, following our winter break. Had we ended the first semester prior to the Winter Recess (as we have done in past years), our first semester would have been three weeks shorter than the second semester (82 days compared to 97 days). This large difference would have presented curricular problems for our courses that are single semester courses.
More details regarding semester finals will come out in our next newsletter on January 6th.
In the meantime, I hope everyone has a wonderful and restful break!
Sincerely,
Tim Carver
Principal

Leaving the building after school
After School at UHS
In order to maintain an orderly, supervised environment at UHS after the school day ends, it is important that students who do not have after school activities at the high school leave the building and campus. There is not adequate supervision for students to simply roam the building or hang out with their friends on school grounds.
Parents, we are asking your help in making UHS more secure after school. Have a plan for what your student(s) is doing after school. Make plans for your children to ride a bus, walk, or be picked up from UHS. There is not supervision at UHS past 3:30 on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday and 2:30 on Wednesday and Thursday for students who are waiting for a ride. Students who do not have after school activities will be asked to leave the building by the times stated above.
After school computer hours at UHS
The computer lab in the media center will be open the following times:
Wednesday, Thursday – 2:30-3:30
After evening games and activities
After events, students should vacate the building no later than 20 minutes after the conclusion of the event.

Urbandale Education Foundation -- Brad Peyton Memorial information
As we enter into another holiday season, the Urbandale Education Foundation would like to extend a sincere thank you for your support of the Brad Peyton Memorial Golf event. We are grateful for the 200 sponsors, participants, volunteers and dinner guests who came together this past June to honor a family, celebrate a life, and support Urbandale Schools.
Since the tourney began in 2014, we’ve raised over $100,000 in support of scholarships for students, classroom grants for teachers, and alumni connections. All of which wouldn’t have been possible without you!
As we begin to plan for our 2019 event, we hope you will again consider supporting the golf tournament. We are recruiting Title, Lead, Lunch, Beverage, and Hole sponsors. Details of all sponsorship levels are listed in the attached PDF; you’re also welcome to sign up online.
You may be in the midst of planning your charitable donations for the coming year. We will be contacting you shortly after the first of the year to request your commitment to supporting the upcoming Peyton Memorial Golf Tournament scheduled for Monday, June 24, 2019, at Hyperion Field Club.
Thank you for your support and we’re looking forward to another successful event in 2019!
Sincerely,
Dan Meyer

"Know Your Constitution" Project- Three UHS finalists!
UHS had three students selected as finalists in the "Know Your Constitution" Project put on by the Iowa Bar Association! Congratulations to Jonah Larsen, Matt Moran, and Jacob Sammon!!
They are invited to a Special Luncheon on Friday January 11th and then are eligible for a trip to Washington D.C. This year's speaker is Iowa Supreme Court Justice Susan Christensen and a constitutional law speaker as well.
State of Iowa who participated in the “Know Your Constitution” Project. From the finalists, five students and their teachers will be chosen by a random drawing to attend the all expense paid, Close-Up Foundation’s five-day long education work session in Washington, D.C., in February 2019. The work sessions are organized to develop a deeper understanding of government and the political process.
The “Know Your Constitution” Project is designed to enrich students’ understanding and
appreciation of the Constitution. The students participating in the project were required to familiarize themselves with Constitution related issues. A quiz was completed by each participating student. An essay question accompanied the quiz in case of a tie. This year’s essay topic involved Constitutional questions centered on Presidential Pardon power and protection of Special Counsel investigations. Students were asked to consider the nature of Separation of Powers as it relates to the Executive and legislative branches of government.
Good luck, gentlemen!
