The Fairview Connection

MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
We’ve had another great week here at Fairview! As shared last Friday, this week was our annual safety week where we practiced a variety of emergency procedures with our students to ensure they knew what we would do if we ever had an emergency here at school. I was so proud of our students and staff for taking these drills seriously, being well prepared and ready to follow directions. Special thanks goes out to the Mount Prospect Police and Fire Departments for overseeing our emergency drills to provide us with feedback on our procedures. We are fortunate to live in such a supportive and connected community!
Looking at the weeks ahead, we hope that you and your family will join us for Camp Fairview on Thursday, September 15th from 6:00-7:30 pm! This event will include several camp themed literacy activities for families to enjoy. This is an event to participate in as a family, so plan to stick together as you go to each station set up throughout the school. All students must be accompanied by an adult in order for the event to be a success. We are really looking forward to enjoying this experience together as we aim to increase our students' love for reading. Please see this link for more details about Camp Fairview.
At the start of each school year, we take time to review our school wide expectations so students know what it looks like to be safe, respectful and responsible at school. We held grade level assemblies last week to review this and our staff reviews expectations throughout the school year in an ongoing fashion as well. To keep you informed of these expectations, here is a copy of our Fairview School Expectations Matrix.
For your planning purposes, our Fall Parent Teacher Conferences will take place on Tuesday, November 1st (8:05 am - 3:35 pm), Thursday, November 10th (3:40-6:40 pm), and Tuesday, November 15th (3:40-6:40 pm). We have received feedback from some parents that having an option for a remote conference using Zoom is a help to them from a convenience and/or childcare perspective. Other parents have shared that in-person conferences are preferred for a variety of reasons. In light of this feedback, we plan to offer both types of conference, however, from a teacher perspective, it is helpful to cluster Zoom conferences together because they prepare differently for each type of conference. In order to help determine roughly how many Zoom conference slots we would like to make available, please fill out this short survey separately for each of your children who attend Fairview.
Thank you for taking the time to read this week’s newsletter. I hope you enjoy the upcoming three day weekend as we celebrate Labor Day on Monday. We look forward to seeing our students again on Tuesday. Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal

BUS BULLETIN
Throughout the year buses may be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances (e.g., vehicular congestion; train traffic, weather, mechanical issues, etc.). The district has been using Bus Bulletin for several years now and is confident that this online notification system is the best way to inform parents should the need arise. Click on the bus for more information and to register.
STUDENT SAFETY
We have many students who ride their bikes to school. Bike riders should always observe bike safety rules. Bike riding is not allowed in the bus turnaround at any time during the school day.
It is the intent of the school, and District 57, to provide a safe and healthy environment for children.
We are asking that you please not bring your dog/pet on school property for the safety of all our children. We have students who are afraid of dogs or are allergic.
REMINDERS FOR DROP-OFF/PICK-UP ZONE IN THE NORTH PARKING LOT
1. Please pull forward as much as possible. The goal is to have 3-4 vehicles at a time drop off or pick up.
2. Please have children exit the vehicle only in the designated area and on the passenger side.
3. Please have your children ready to exit when you pull up. If you are in the midst of a conversation please park in the lot and finish, and then walk your child or pull around to the back of the line.
4. Please be patient and plan your time accordingly. Students enter the building at the 8:45 a.m. bell and classes begin at the 8:50 a.m. bell.
5. Please be aware that there are many vehicles behind you and everyone is in a hurry. Your consideration is appreciated.
6. Please refrain from using your cell phone in the parking lot or around the building. Remember that Illinois State Law prohibits cell phone use in school zones and this includes the parking lot when picking up and dropping off.
7. Thank you for your help in making this a very safe and efficient area for your children.
