Parkdale Elementary Weekly Update

This Week...

Dear Staff,

Happy Mother's Day! I hope everyone had an enjoyable day today.

Hiring Updates - Our interview committee of Shannon, Kathleen, Rosie, and I interviewed a number of qualified applicants last week. We are looking to make some offers by the end of this week.

School Board Meeting the week at PDES - We will host the school board meeting at PDES this week. You are welcome to attend, of course. By no means do I expect you to be there. I will likely introduce you if you are interested in staying. I'll also be highlighting our PTO for all they do for our students.

Have a great week!

PDES Committee Work

Our plates are full and our school days are filled with giving all of ourselves to educating our students. As we talked about in our last staff meeting, we just don't get enough time to collaborate and plan for instruction. There are a few things we have discussed that would be great to do some collaborating around and I'm hopeful that some of you may be interested in working on these things this summer for a few hours.

Here are the topics. Please let me know if you are interested in doing some work at the curriculum rate on one or more of these this summer:

Second Steps - Adopting a Scope and Sequence for 2nd Steps and some of our Growth Mindset lessons

Teaching with Poverty in Mind - Developing a list of best practice strategies and some professional development for staff

Arts Integrated Programing at PDES - Researching successful programs and exploring how it might be applied at Parkdale.

Native Language Literacy - Research is clear on this topic. Best practice for ELLs is a native literacy program that transitions to English by 3rd or even 5th grade. However, as we know, there are many barriers for a program like this, especially in a small school like ours. This work would be focused on reviewing how native language literacy went for us when we did it as a school in the past and then providing a recommendation for our future.

Again, please contact me if you are interested in doing some of this work over the summer.

Collaborative Problem Solving Training with Sue Jepson

Tuesday, May 24th, 3:30-5:30pm

Holly's Room

Collaborative Problem Solving is a revolutionary, evidence-based approach for helping children with behavioral challenges. CPS promotes the understanding that challenging kids lack the skill, not the will, to behave well – specifically skills related to problem solving, flexibility and frustration tolerance. Unlike traditional models of discipline, the CPS approach avoids the use of power, control and motivational procedures and instead focuses on building helping relationships and teaching at-risk kids the skills they need to succeed. This first class of this two part series will provide a brief overview of the CPS method and look at it's components and then we will follow up with a second class for further exploration and trouble-shooting for those who are exploring using this model. Please keep in mind that this is an introduction to CPS and does not substitute for the multi-day trainings that are necessary for certification.

Growth Mindset at Parkdale Elementary

The Growth Mindset strategy of the week this week is...

Let go of student labels and bias

Other ideas that we came up with as a staff are linked below

Teaching the Mountaineer Expectations: Month 2, Week 1

Focusing Attention:

Learning happens every day at our school. An important skill for learning is focusing attention. When we focus our attention we use our ears, our eyes, and our brain! This week, put on your attent-o-scopes and notice how they help you listen and learn.
