Picture Yourself Growing in First Grade
Parent Visitation
During our Daily Five, we have worked very hard to build our stamina! Students will spend some of the time independently reading. Please support me in showing students how valuable this time is by reading as well, so please bring a book. Modeling your excitement about reading is a powerful statement for our young readers.
I am so sorry, but I will not be at school on Friday afternoon. There will be a substitute in the classroom. Unfortunately, I will be traveling to visit a family member that is very ill. To help you plan your visit, below is a copy of our schedule. Please feel free to visit your child during a special area class!

The Daily Five
We have been hard at work with our Daily Five! I am happy to announce that all of the choices are “Open for Business!” We are loving the Daily Five!
In addition to The Daily Five, we spent time adding reading strategies to our FACE of a Reader board. With a focus on decoding unknown words, we discussed that strong readers use more than one strategy to solve unknown words. Using the pictures, skipping a word, and looking for familiar chunks were some of the strategies that we introduced and practiced during the week.
After working hard to set the expectations and healthy, independent work habits, I am excited to start guided reading groups this week. I have completed assessing the children and I have placed them in groups. Guided reading is an important time where your child will receive decoding and comprehension instruction based on his or her instructional reading level and needs. During the week, you will see a reading bag come home with a book. Please have your child read that book to at night, and please return the book the next day. I look forward to a successful partnership to reach our goals of creating independent readers this year!
Small Moment Stories
A strong writer can bring their story to life by...
* Making their characters move and talk
* Taking itsy bitsy steps
* Showing a characters feelings
Next week, we will look to begin to revise and edit our work to prepare to publish our work to share it with the world! Stay tuned for news about our ribbon cutting ceremony!
