Principal Post
This week, students will be out of school on Friday. This day is set aside to allow parents and teachers to come together to talk about student progress. We believe that the open relationship between teacher and parent can support student growth. We hope you have scheduled a conference with your child's teacher. If not, we hope that you will connect with our staff in one of the following ways this year:
- Attend our family nights (such as VIP night and others that will be scheduled throughout the year)
- Visit for breakfast during American Education Week (this will occur in November)
- Receive Patriot Power Cards that we use to recognize student success in demonstrating one of our 8 lifeskills
- Receive a note, phone call, or remark on the daily report that is positive
- Join us as a volunteer to assist small groups of children, organize and prepare materials, or prepare for upcoming events
- Cheer on your student during field day events (Sept 30), Run-walk-a-thon (October 28th)
- Eat lunch with your child on any day that is convenient
We know that with engaging events, students, teachers and families can come together to create a place where students love to come to school. We are so thankful to have great families and great students.
News from PTA
The mission of the GWES PTA is to be a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families and communities, and a strong advocate for the education and well-being of every child. I hope you will consider joining. It is our school goal to increase the membership this year. There are many ways you can help our school. Below are simple ways to benefit GWES:
*Be sure to register your Food City cards for GWES! These have to be renewed each year.
*Register your Kroger card.
*Use Amazon Smile.
*When you wash your car at Express Car Wash on Stone Drive, enter fundraiser code 1000.
Please bring the family and join us for a Panera Bread Spirit night on Tuesday, September 13th from 4-8. You must have the flier that will come home with your child for GWES to benefit.
Be sure to enjoy with your child the book that they bring home on September 23rd courtesy of the Gift of Reading program sponsored by the PTA.
Please contact Angie Michelli at almichelli@aol.com if you would like to help with Field Day on Friday, September 30th.
Save the date for the Annual GWES Run/Walk A Thon! It is coming up on Friday, October 28th! If you would like to help us plan this event, please meet with us at Panera Bread at 9am on September 20th.

Car line reminders:
- Please pull all the way up to number one, or the next number in line rather than stopping in front of the school doors during morning drop off. We know it is nice to see your student walk in, but there are often many cars behind you hoping to make it in time
- Please do not park in the west end parking lot, this is the bus entrance and is only for the Early Childhood Learning Center employees and families
- We are here to help! We will monitor your child exiting the car and do not mind to help if needed, please do not exit your vehicle (refer to number one for reason why)
- Thanks for your patience during afternoon dismissal. We know it's a long line...but a very safe process!
- The sun is very bright coming up the hill in the morning, please keep an eye out for students crossing in the crosswalk.
- September is truancy awareness month...please keep in mind that students perform better when they are at school on time, have regular attendance and engaged with as many school opportunities as possible.
What's happening around GWES?
Mrs. Good and Mrs. Hazlett have our morning Running Club setting the pace for the day two mornings a week! It's healthy for our brains to exercise prior to starting our school day.
Our WeCycle club has collected classroom and office recycling and this leadership opportunity saves our school money and waste-thanks for your help GWES Patriots.
Club time is in full swing! We have now had two club sessions. Students made a choice of their top three to four club choices and will rotate every nine weeks. These clubs are intended to help students discover an interest or talent that may have remained undiscovered...these activities enrich the whole child!
Project based learning is underway! LCC and LCF will have launch events this week to begin a project in which students solve real problems, create public products and study a topic in depth to share their knowledge with others. LCD will be underway soon!
Mr Hefner will host our first Celebration of Learning Performance with LCD in October, we look forward to his first production!
Mrs. Bradley has been teaching coding algorithms to our students through our library classes. This curriculum is sure to teach problem solving and critical thinking...Patriots are powering up!
