Halo Highlight: Holy Moments with Mia Orgeron

Dear Saints Families,

Happy Holy Week!

If you were asked what a holy moment looks like, how would you respond? Time spent before the Eucharist? A group of teens standing in line for Reconciliation? How about a 2:00 matinee on a Thursday? That one is not so obvious, but let me explain. When Father Long shared that a local parishioner wanted to sponsor any senior who wanted to see the film Unplanned, we knew we were being invited to a holy moment. Timing couldn’t be worse as the movie’s last feature was only days away, but we made it happen.

The students and I were moved by the movie, and its message will not be forgotten. This small gesture of generosity is a perfect example of a “Holy Moment,” as described in Matthew Kelly’s book The Greatest Lie in the History of Christianity. Coincidence or not, fellow administrator Wendy Wicke, Principal of St. Margaret’s Catholic School, had just shared this book with me and other administrators in the diocese. As I read, I hung onto every word because its message is crystal clear. Find everyday events and recognize them as holy. Simple, uncomplicated, pure. In this instance, one person wanted to share the movie’s message. The school was contacted, and it happened.

We, as a school community can change the world, one holy moment at a time. With so many difficult and complicated issues in the world, let us focus on the simplicity of Christ’s love and mercy. Here at St. Louis Catholic, especially during Holy Week, I see holy moments every day. The smiles of our students, the extra effort of staff, the sacrifice of parents. Holy Moments. As my favorite saint, St. Teresa of Calcutta once said, “If you want to change the world, go home and love your family." I hope your Easter season is filled with Holy Moments with your family and friends.

On Wednesday, St. Louis Catholic students, faculty and staff gathered in the Commons to hear one man’s unbelievable story and powerful life lessons.

Damon West seemingly had every opportunity in front of him in 1996, receiving a scholarship to play Division I football for the University of North Texas with a strong family support system rooted in faith back home in Port Arthur, Texas. But what lay beneath the surface was the painful early stages of a true disease. Read more.
