What an AMAZING First Week!
A beloved principal at a Grand Prairie high school was recently diagnosed with cancer. As I know, this type of diagnosis makes you reflect on truly what is important. I was amazed at his response when asked about what his final message would be to his students. His response "Treat each other with kindness, and be respectful". So in, what could be his last weeks and months of life, he reminds us of the importance of two very simple skills that as parents and educators that we need to teach our children. Kindness. Respect.
As teachers and school leaders we have big dreams and goals for ALL of our students, but teaching these two critical skills are truly at the top of our list. It is critical that we model this for our students even on our worst days.
This is why we do confidentiality training, because I want us to be respectful of each others rights. This is why we construct a social contract, because all of our interactions should be kind. This is why we start meetings with good things, because it helps us remember how blessed we are. This is why I ask that you assume the best of each other and not gossip about each other. Because if we have a problem, then the kind and respectful thing to do, is to approach that person and work it out for the sake of our students. (What a great lesson for us to be teaching our students and each other!)
So as we start the year (and we already have 5 days behind us), I ask that you guard these two character traits (skills) with integrity and also a sense of urgency! As teachers if we do these two things well, the rest will fall into place!!! If you would like to see the whole story I have copied the link below! It is a great reminder to all of us that life is short and each minute needs to count....for the right things!

DID You know???
In April, Jackson's submission was chosen as one of the winners and we immediately ordered the bench. It arrived in late May and Jackson was honored at our 5th grade awards for his strong desire to honor Jaydan and celebrate his spirit. He also had the chance to present the bench privately to the Thompson's on the last day of school.
As we continue to celebrate Jaydan and Jackson, the bench was installed this summer and this week we (Tori) will conduct short lessons for all grades on how to use the bench. I can think of no greater legacy then teaching students how to pass along kindness, even on our playground! We will share pictures next week!
I hope you will join me in getting this message out to our families and community.
