Principal's Corner
Dear Orca Families and Students,
What an amazing week we had at Orlando Science Schools. We are excited to share with you many exciting announcements and reminders!
Orcas, Orlando Science Middle/High will be hosting the National Character School Accreditation Team on March 9th in our campuses. We are excited to show our school’s CORE VALUES, character traits, positive school culture, caring faculty, nurturing learning environment and student accomplishments. We look forward to hosting the team.
Please join me to congratulate our junior student Alexis Dorman for earning President’s Volunteer Service Award and becoming the Finalist of 2020 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in Florida! Alexis served as a role model student in her school and community and her volunteered hours of service helped the people to overcome the challenges. Please see the details about her award and accomplishment below.
Our very own Science Olympiad teams made history in 2020 Central Florida Regional. In Division C, our teams got 1st and 3rd place overall. They received ten 1st place, eight 2nd place, and three 3rd place medals. While all our competing Division C students made us very proud, some made us equally proud by NOT competing in the regional. Our most accomplished Division C team opted out competing at the regional, sacrificing individual glory to volunteer in supervising events. Their selfless action ensured all participating students had a much better experience. We are very proud of them. Congratulations Orcas, Way to go!
Another great accomplishment came from 2020 Orange County Dr. Nelson Ying Science Expo Science Fair. Orcas received 36 place awards with 43 students participating. We also received several special awards. It was an amazing evening celebrating the success with our awesome students and their families! Please see the details and placements below.
I am very excited and proud to announce our 2020 National Merit Finalists! Please join me to congratulate senior students Esha, Harshita, Saardhak, and Haydn! They all met all requirements to advance to Finalist standing in the competition. All of them are considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2020!
Orcas, be sure to download the 2019-20 OSHS Assessment Calendar found in this week's newsletter, it is important to keep these dates in mind when planning appointments and vacations.

February is African American History Month
Mary Church Terrell
Mary Church Terrell was a self-described dignified agitator. In 1895 she co-founded and became the first president of the National Association of Colored Women. When President Theodore Roosevelt dishonorably discharged 167 African American soldiers of the 25th Infantry in Brownsville, Texas in 1906, she went to Secretary of War William Taft's office demanding justice in a "proper, dignified" manner. Appropriately titling her book A Colored Woman in a White World, Terrell wrote, "A white woman has only one handicap to overcome--that of sex. I have two--both sex and race. ...Colored men have only one--that of race." (Courtesy of Library of Congress, Prints, & Photographs Division)
The National Museum of African American History & Culture's exhibit "We Return Fighting: The African American Experience in World War I" opened on December 13, 2019. The exhibition highlights the experience of African Americans during WWI. It will close on June 14, 2020. Here you can learn more about Mary Church Terrell and see the collection centered around her extraordinary life.

2020 National Merit Finalists
We are proud to announce our 2020 National Merit Finalists! Congratulations to our senior students Esha, Harshitha, Saardhak, and Haydn! They all met all requirements to advance to Finalist standing in the competition. All of them are being considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2020!
Over 1.6 million juniors in about 22,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. They worked really hard to move up to the Finalists level. They are four of the 7 OSS finalists in the history of our school. Congratulations to all of their current and previous teachers who had a great impact on their education since they entered Orlando Science Middle/High in 6th grade! We wish you all the best, well done!

Alexis is the founder of “Career Aid for Young immigrants and Refugees" (CAFYIR), a non profit organization through which she has held academic workshops for nearly 50 young people; her efforts include soliciting donations, securing learning space and supplies, and recruiting volunteers. Alexis started her project after learning about lack of programs specifically designed to meet the needs of immigrant and refugee students. 30/30 Dismissal Rule
What is Delayed Dismissal? 30/30 Rule?
The “30/30 Rule" is a Delayed Dismissal Weather procedure that the nationally recognized. It is required that the “30/30 Rule” be enacted by the school if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Orlando Science Middle/High follows this rule.
When 30/30 Rule is implemented, students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes has passed from the last sound of thunder. However, parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child/children during delayed dismissal, will be allowed to sign out their child/children at the cafeteria or front office.
In order to pick up your student(s) from the cafeteria or front office during this procedure, parents/guardians must bring their dismissal sign to the front door of the school to sign their child/children out. If you do not have a dismissal sign, you will need to provide a picture ID and be on the school pick-up list to pick-up the child/children. Bus riders will be delivered home when conditions are all safe for dismissal.
An automated telephone and/or email message will be used to notify parents/guardians about delayed dismissals. Always be sure to update the school when your phone or email information changes. Thank you for your cooperation on our students’ safety.
