Avoca West News
Week of November 10, 2016
Veteran's Day Breakfast
There's STILL time to RSVP at (847)724-6800 or benedac@avoca37.org by next Friday. We look forward to packing the place! All are welcome -- Avoca West, Marie Murphy, and beyond!
Upcoming Kindness Project
Following our visit from Caleb White this past October, many of our students have expressed desires to help spread kindness and to help others in the community. A big thanks to Karen Azar and Rebecca Goldman for working with me and with Mrs. Gurwin-Gornick, the staff sponsor for our Avoca West Helping Hands Club, to organize a school wide effort to get all involved!
The project will kick off a bit closer to Thanksgiving, but each classroom will synergize to collect and compile a box to deliver to a homeless shelter. The contents will include everything from lip balm to a scarf and granola bar. Each class will receive a list of items to collect which will be shared at a class meeting. Though we will be organizing the boxes as an in-school philanthropic activity, students and parents who wish to take an active role in delivering the boxes will be invited to do so. Stay tuned for more information in the future!
Kudos to building both habits of gratitude and giving to others!
Indoor Recess -- Legos Needed
If you have Legos to donate, we will happily take your donations to compiling several grade-level bins of Legos. Please know that your donation will be a school-wide donation and is not guaranteed to go directly to your child's classroom. Thank you for your consideration!
From the PTC: Upcoming Sip and Shop at Bloomingdale's
The 8th Grade Graduation Committee Sip and Shop fundraiser is just around the corner. Please join us for a night of wine, hors d'oeuvres and shopping on November 17, 2016 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm and get a head start on your holiday shopping! Bloomingdales will be running its Buy More, Save More Sale at this time. In addition, you will be able to admire the 8th grade children who will be modeling outfits provided by Bloomingdales! Admission is $15 per person. Raffle prize tickets are $5 each or 6 for $25 and the 50/50 cash raffle is $10 per ticket. Please make checks payable to Avoca School District 37 and turn them into the Avoca West or Marie Murphy office. All proceeds will support the 8th grade graduation, class gift and teacher gifts.
We have some wonderful raffle prizes:
- Cosmetic basket
- Majorca suite (necklace, bracelet and earrings)
- Tahari cashmere/wool blend scarf
- Michael Aram frame and Julia Knight bowl
- A beautiful necklace designed by our very own Avoca parent, Jennifer Volkadav. This lovely smokey quartz is a beautiful quality and a lovely faceted heart shape. It measures a plump 15x15x5mm. It is wire wrapped with a yellow gold filled and oxidized sterling mixed metal combination on an oxidized solid sterling silver 1.3mm cable chain that is accented on one side with links of genuine red garnets and smokey quartz. The length of the necklace is 21 inches. It is finished with a sturdy lobster clasp. There are no open jump rings on the necklace anywhere, making it very durable. Perfect for your Fall wardrobe!
If you are unable to join us on November 17th, you may shop November 14-16 and the school will still receive 10% of all your purchases. Just tell the sales associate, you are shopping for the Marie Murphy fundraiser. The sales associate will give you a duplicate receipt that you can give to customer service, place in a box by the escalator or hand in to Demetra Siakavelis or Frances Yoshitani.
Please feel free to bring your friends and family to this fun event. Moreover, children are welcome and encouraged to attend. Bloomingdales is asking for a final headcount on Monday. Although you may bring your checks for raffle tickets and admission to the event, please contact Deme Siakavelis to let her know that you plan on attending the event by emailing her at demesiak@gmail.com! Please also note that the student recognition event originally scheduled by the Avoca 37 School Board for the same night has been moved to January so that all families can attend the Sip and Shop.
Thank you,
