Behavior/Engagement Part 2 -Dr. Terry Scott
Here are some additional insights from Dr. Terry Scott. These are good things for us to reflect on.
1. What does your schedule look like? Do you share the tasks of the day? Consider taking that a step further. For example: if you have 2 pages of content, you could say something like "We are half way done. It is all downhill now."
2. Does the physical arrangement of your room allow you to make eye contact with all your students? Does it allow you to make a direct line to those that might need a little bit extra checking in or encouragement?
3. Never let them see you sweat. A friend that I trained with for many years said "Be cooler than a polar bear's toenails". Be confidant in your decisions even if on the inside you are saying "What the heck do I do now? or Why in the world did I just say that?" Be sure to reflect afterwards to help you move forward.
4. If a student is making a not great choice, give back a direction prior to engaging with them. This makes your response contingent upon them following a direction before they get attention from the teacher. (positive attention versus negative attention) For example: let's say you ask them to start an assignment and they blurt out I don't understand it or I need help. You can say, "Put your name on the paper and I will be right there to help you." If they continue to stall, repeat the direction. As soon as they comply be there to help them.
