Reminder: On Demand Writing Assessment- In to Illuminate between 12/11 and 12/22
The On-Demand Writing assessment is an assessment given at the beginning of each genre you are teaching, then again at the culmination of the unit. Teachers score the assessment to highlight growth, then analyze the writing to identify areas which the student still needs support in her/his writing
MAJOR CHANGES:
We are in our second year of full implementation of the Reading and Writing Units of Study, after it was adopted for grades K-5 in Summer 2016. This year, teachers will enter writing assessment results for three focal students two times per year, per the district calendar.

Both the Pre and Post Score for each of the three teacher-determined focal student will be entered.
MLK, Jr. Oratorical
Dear Colleagues,
The Oratorical Festival is designed so that teachers can challenge students to think critically about Dr. King's Legacy and philosophy and how it can inspire us to transform our lives, our communities, and society. This thinking is meant to transform the way students learn about history by focusing not only on Dr. King's visionary ideas but also on the work of ordinary people who made extraordinary contributions to the liberation movements.
The time for the Oratorical is approaching quickly.
As we prepare, I wanted to remind you of the following:
Poetry - Published Poetry (1 performer, up to 3 minutes) Poetry - Original Poetry (1 poet performing poem they wrote, up to 3 minutes) Speech - Not So Famous & Famous (1 performer, up to 3 minutes) Chorals/Scenes - (2 or more performing poetry, speech, monologue or scene – 5 min) A sign up sheet for auditorium practice will be placed in the office.
HEARTS (School Climate & Community)
Warning: Do not Have Extra Unstructured Time this Week! It will NOT lower your stress!
As we have learned in our trauma trainings, routine, predictability and clear schedules with tasks help our students stay regulated and calm.
If you are going outside for extra PE, make it structured (ie no extended extra recess beyond 5 minutes), and do not bring your students out for free play time during recess times or PE times for other classes.
This CAN be a time for planned structured fun activities that build off of student excitement. Here's some things online to get your creativity going this week.

Staff Holiday Party- Weds, 12/20
Please bring a dish to share and a White Elephant gift for our annual gift exchange.
Movie Day Friday-
Hopefully everyone has met the Toolbox challenge this month!
Movies- Please coordinate with your colleagues. If you need help with technology, please talk to Mr. Miller, but DO NOT wait until Friday morning to plan your movie.
Is anyone planning to use the auditorium? Or the library
Please let me know so we don't double book. The auditorium will be in use for the lunch schedule between 11-1:30 so do not plan to show a movie during that time slot.
SEL Reminder-
And don't forget to start passing out those Tiny Toolboxes so you reach your class goal of giving 25 tiny toolboxes!
