Letters to a Pre Scientist
The Letters to a Pre Scientist (LTPS) facilitates a “snail mail” pen pal program that connects 5th-9th grade students with real scientists from around the world during science class. The mission of LTPS is to demystify STEM careers and empower all students to see themselves as future scientists.
LTPS is currently recruiting teachers to host the program in their classrooms for the 2019-20 school year, and they are looking forward to expanding to new states for the first time! Applications are due May 6th - link to more info and the app is: www.prescientist.org/for-teachers/penpalprogram/
Who they are looking for - science teachers:
- who teach 5th-9th grade
- in DC, MD, WV, MS, AL, GA, LA, SC, CA, NV, AZ, NM, OH, IL, IN
- at school where >60% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch
- that have been at their current school for at least one year
If this sounds interesting to you, please help me spread the word! I’m happy to help answer any questions you may have about the program or you can contact Lucy Madden at LTPS directly: lucy.madden@prescientist.org.

Update on school closure make up days:
With all of the winter weather we have had in the last couple of months, we want to clarify closure/make up days for each community.
Chester (all schools): All built in closure/make up days were used, so school will be in session on both Friday, April 12th and Friday May 24th. We will apply for a waiver from the state for the additional four days.
Portola (all schools): All built in closure/make up days were used, so school will be in session on both Friday, April 12th and Friday May 24th. We will apply for a waiver from the state for the additional day.
Quincy (all schools): One built in closure/make up day has been used to date, so school will be in session on Friday May 24th. If another school closure occurs prior to Friday, April 12th, school will be in session that day.
Greenville (all schools): One built in closure/make up day has been used to date, so school will be in session on Friday May 24th. If another school closure occurs prior to Friday, April 12th, school will be in session that day. If additional delayed starts are necessary, minimum days will be extended to regular hours.
As a reminder, closure/make up day changes do not apply to twelve month employees. Please share in your newsletters, and feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
Please note, if the state denies our waiver application(s), we will need to add days to the end of our instructional calendar.

Hello all!
It is that time of year again! As CAASPP testing season is getting close I thought it would be good to remind everyone of a few things -

If you are having trouble signing in or accessing the information you need, I can reset passwords and change permissions on accounts. If you have any issues, please let me know! I am one of the coordinators for the district and can make calls to CAASPP on your behalf if technical difficulties arise, and I also deliver materials for testing that are needed. This information also goes for ELPAC testing if you are having trouble with that too! Remember the ELPAC TOMS and the CAASPP TOMS sites are different. The highlighted links I have included in this email will take you to the respective sites.
You can call me at (530) 283-6500 ext 5240 or email me at jdanderson@pcoe.k12.ca.us if you have any questions.
Finally, the TOMS website will be down from Wednesday the 27th of this month until Monday April 1st. So if you cannot access what you need you will need to wait until the following Tuesday April 2nd.
