Walker's News and Notes
A Word On Empathy
Empathy is not connecting to an experience; it’s connecting to the
emotions that connect to the experience. • We don’t need first hand
experience of an event to extend empathy we don’t need to have
been dumped, or fired, or lost a parent or sibling or partner to relate.
If you’ve ever felt grief, disappointment, shame, fear, loneliness, or
anger, you’re qualified to extend empathy. • Empathy consists of five
skills: perspective taking, being nonjudgmental, understanding the
other person’s feelings, communicating your understanding, and
mindfulness. • Empathy isn’t about fixing. It’s the brave choice to be
with someone in their darkness not to race to turn on the light so
we feel better. • Empathy builds trust and increases connection.

Reading Updates:
Thanks for a great week of eLearning! We recognize the work you are putting in everyday for your students. Please check out the differentiation tool in google drive to start thinking about ways to differentiate for your students.
When we visited classrooms this week, we saw great things going on! The number of students participating continues to increase everyday. That is because of the positive relationships you have with your students! We also saw
teachers providing opportunities for students to engage in interactive learning using Kahoot! and Jam Board.
Thank you for everything you are doing for your students. Please reach out to your Literacy team for support.
Social & Emotional Updates:
1. Stick to a routine. Go to sleep and wake up at a reasonable time, write a schedule that is varied and includes time for work as well as self-care.
2. Dress for the social life you want, not the social life you have. Get showered and dressed in comfortable clothes, wash your face, brush your teeth. Take the time to do a bath or a facial. Put on some bright colors. It is amazing how our dress can impact our mood.
