From the Desk of Principal Mr. Casebolt
Hello Riverside Parents and Guardians,
It has been a busy week at Riverside as we have robotics and the Drama Club rolling! I also was able to witness our Band students as they prepared for Festival in Redford on Thursday, March 9th. We are also in the process of finishing up our Spelling Bee with our winners to be announced very soon. We have two weeks to go until Spring Break- So hard to believe. When we return from that break we will be into Spring Testing which we will share the details and plan very soon!
Have a great weekend!

Spring 2023 RMS Parent Teacher Conference
Hello Riverside Middle School Families,
The Riverside Middle School staff invites you to join us for Parent-Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. Conferences will be held in person in each teacher’s classroom using a walk-in format, which means that you do not have to schedule an appointment. Chairs will be set up outside each classroom where a line will form. We ask that you wait outside the classroom if the teacher is meeting with a parent. At the end of the conference, the teacher will greet you and invite you in. Please limit your conferences to a maximum of 5 minutes to ensure that teachers are able to meet with as many parents as possible. This will continue until 8:00 P.M.
If you cannot make it to conferences but would like to speak with your child's teacher(s), we ask that you email each teacher individually to request an email or phone conference at a later date. You can find a list of RMS teachers and their emails here.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher(s) or counselor.
Thank you for your cooperation. We look forward to continuing our partnership with our Riverside families.
Sincerely,
Riverside Middle School Administration

Spring Testing Electronic Device Policy 2022 - 2023 (PSAT, MSTEP, WIDA)
Dear Crestwood Families,
The Crestwood School District honors honesty and integrity in everything we do. This is especially important when we are assessing students. As a part of our continued effort to ensure that our district maintains policies required by the Michigan Department of Education, we are sharing with you our Electronic Device Policy for state assessments.
Personal electronic devices that are not used for testing pose a large security risk to all state assessments. As accessibility to and the use of additional electronic devices has increased over the last few years, which has led to instances of cheating, plagiarism, and inappropriate use of devices that have had a negative impact on the validity and reliability of the state’s assessments. This has also caused invalidation of student tests and has resulted in negative impacts to assessment participation and accountability.
Examples of electronic devices include, but are not limited to:
● any electronic device that can be used to record, transmit, or receive information, not used for testing
● computer tablets, iPads, e-readers (for example: Kindle)
● smart watches (for example: Fitbits; Apple, Garmin, Samsung watches; any watch with access to other applications or the internet)
● smartphones and cell phones
● Bluetooth headphones, smart earbuds (for example: Beats, iPods), or any headphone with access to other applications or the internet)
● smart glasses (for example: Google Glass)
● desktop computers, laptops, Chromebooks, not used for testing
Prior to Testing:
● Students are not permitted to use, wear, or access any personal, non-testing electronic devices during testing or while on a break when in an active testing session.
● Students need to leave ALL electronic devices at home and are not allowed to bring them into the testing room.
● Upon entry to the testing room, students will be screened to ensure that they do not have any electronic devices listed above. If an electronic device is found, devices will be placed in a bin for holding until the student has completed the test. Crestwood School District and/or Hype Athletics will not be responsible for lost or stolen devices. We urge all students and parents to not allow devices to be brought to testing facilities.
During Testing:
● Administration staff will actively monitor students in the testing room and on breaks to ensure that electronic devices are not accessed.
● The testing environment is not to be disturbed by any electronic devices not used for testing or test administration. If an additional electronic device is medically necessary for a testing student, the testing student must have prior approval from the college board. When testing, the device must be left with the test administrator, or the test must be administered to the student in a one-to-one student setting, and the student must be actively monitored at all times while testing.
● No pictures or videos may be taken during testing.
● If a student has a cell phone or other non-test electronic device out at any point during a test session, that student’s test has been compromised and is to be invalidated due to prohibited behavior, even if the student did not use the cell phone or device.
● Students are not allowed to wear or access “wearable” technology (such as smartwatches, fitness trackers, Bluetooth headphones) during testing. If a student is wearing such a device during testing, that student’s test must be invalidated because the student has access to the device regardless of whether it was used or not.
● Even if a student has exited or submitted their test, they cannot use cell phones or other electronic devices in the testing room. If the student has exited/submitted the test and then accesses a cell phone/electronic device (including wearable technology), this constitutes prohibited behavior and the student’s test will be invalidated.
Policy for when a device is necessary to complete the exam, for example WIDA or M-Step:
● Students are not allowed to access the device used for testing for any other purpose than to complete the test during the test session.
● A student may not access any additional websites or applications during testing, or for any other purpose after testing, while in the testing room.
Consequences for Violation of this Policy:
If students are found in violation of this policy, along with having their test invalidated, their electronic device may be searched and photos taken of cell phone screens to be sent to the testing company. Students will be ineligible to take the test again this school year. In addition to the testing consequences, students will be in violation of school policies and a consequence will be given.
It is important that we continue to support our students in understanding the importance of procedures and processes. We thank you for all that you do for your children and look forward to a continued collaboration in their future.

Reminders
We are asking that parents DO NOT pick their children up early from school in the afternoon unless it is absolutely necessary. Please do not attempt to pick up your student from school after 2:00 pm unless it is an emergency, as it creating issues for the front office from the high volume of parents seeking their student during this time. If you know your student will need to be out of school at that time (ex: doctor or dentist appt) please pick them up earlier than 2:00 pm.
Thank you for your cooperation. We know that these procedures will preserve our instructional time and will allow for a safer and more orderly student arrival and dismissal each day.
Reminder: Only adults or guardians that are on the emergency card and are over the age of 18 can pick up a student. The adult will need official ID, which will be checked against the emergency card, before they are permitted to sign out the student.
Deliveries - Student Material / Lunch Drop-Off
In order to minimize interruptions to instruction and the security of the building, we have set up a specific drop-off time from 8:00-9:30 am only. If your child has forgotten an item, the only time it can be delivered is from 8:00-9:30 am to minimize disruption to the school. Reminder: If a child forgets their lunch, they will be provided one from the school.
Chromebook Chargers
Students should not bring their chargers to school. Chromebooks should be charged every night at home. The battery life should last the entire day if students are only using the Chromebook during class and for instructional purposes.
Selling Ban
We’ve noticed an increasing number of students purchasing candy in bulk and selling them at school. The selling of any items is prohibited at school. Please do not send your child(ren) to school with large amounts of candy and speak to them about not selling items at school, as consequences may be given to repeat offenders.
Cold Weather Gear
As the colder winter days continue, remember to encourage your child(ren) to wear coats, hats, gloves/mittens, and boots. While the building is warm and toasty, it can be quite cool in the morning as students wait outside and play at recess. Students who do not have proper winter gear will not be able to go outside for recess.
As we transition to colder weather, it is imperative that all of your child's belongings are labeled. They will have lots more gear at school (snow pants, coats, gloves, boots, etc.). Some families use stickers to label items. Other families use a sharpie. Whatever works for you is perfectly fine. We just want to make sure we know what belongs to who. Thanks for your help with this!

- Students must go home and come back to the building at game time. Students must be seated and demonstrating PBIS expectations. Students are not allowed to stay at school between school letting out and the game starting
