Division 5 January Newsletter
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you!! I hope you all had a fun-filled and restful holiday! I am excited to be back at school and look forward to a busy month of learning! In Language Arts, we will be focusing on personal writing continuing with the 6 + 1 traits of writing (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions). We will continue to work on developing reading strategies, but with a focus on non-fiction this month. Please continue to have your child read for at least 30 minutes every day at home to give them extra practice. In Math we will be completing whole number operations and begin learning about fractions. In Science, we complete our unit on diversity of life and will start to learn about simple machines. The government of Canada will continue to be our focus this month in Social Studies. In HACE (Health and Career Education) we will do some goal setting for the New Year and career research. Basketball will be the focus in gym this month. In Fine Arts we continue with thematic activities.
A number of theorists now believe that how well students do in school can be determined by how well they are able to self-regulate. There are some good parenting tips on teaching self-regulation at: http://www.parentingscience.com/teaching-self-control.html.
As cold and flu season is upon us, the public health authority recommends the following: Please encourage your children to wash their hands thoroughly with warm water and soap after using the toilet and prior to eating. A proper hand wash needs warm running water, soap and lots of good hand rubbing for at least 30 seconds. If your child has stomach flu-like symptoms, including upset stomach, vomiting and/or diarrhea, please keep your child home from school until after the symptoms have ended and your child feels better.
Reminder: Please mark the following dates on your calendar:
Friday, January 24th Field trip to Science World (bus)
*Permission slip will go home soon
Wednesday, February 19th Skating @Surrey Sport and Leisure complex (parent drivers will be needed)
Thank you so much for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Colp
