And just like that...we have a new year. 2022 seemed to exit in a whirlwind, sprinkling blessings and challenges all along the way. As we enter this traditional time of reflection and resolution, let us remember to color with kindness, but give ourselves permission to color outside of the lines. With this in mind, our Religious Education team has many exciting adventures planned for our children and families. Cherished opportunities to learn and grow together. I hope the turn of the calendar brings you love, peace and joy. Have a happy new year.

We’re planning a family fun day in March. Thanks to everyone that voted already! We’ve decided to extend the voting period until January 25th. The RE Committee meets the following day and will finalize planning. Ready to let the good times roll with a little roller skating? How about bowling? Have you been to Rockin’ Jump? Would your family rather enjoy the outdoors and go sledding?

In preparation, for the Holiday Cantata, students had an extra RE session on December 11th. They learned about different holiday traditions and created art to share during the cantata. RE students practiced song lyrics and scripts at home, before arriving at church for a final rehearsal before service.

The cantata, held on December 18th, highlighted festivals of light. There was a light display for each; Diyas for Diwali, a menorah for Hanukkah, luminated snowflake for Winter Solstice, tree and nativity for Christmas, a kinara for Kwanzaa. Members of the Coming of Age class shared an introduction to each tradition, which was followed by art and songs for that holiday/festival. RE students did a very good job presenting each festival/holiday and truly brought the spirit of the season.

While the topic for December was traditions and rituals, community was the overarching theme. K4-4th grade students created a colorful talking stick and shared joys and concerns as part of their RE class. The group also learned about different holiday traditions and worship rituals. They enjoyed art and time getting to know each other.

In January, we’ll continue to explore rituals and traditions in worship practices. On January 15th, we’ll have a flower ceremony. The flower ceremony reminds us that we are all different but have a special place as part of the whole. Each student will receive a flower to take home.

The World Religions class has been learning about Christianity. In December, the class studied the Greek Orthodox Church. We visited St. George Melkite Greek Catholic Church and had an opportunity to sit talk with a priest afterward. Thanks to all that participated!

The study of Christianity continues with Catholicism on January 15th. On February 5th, we’ll visit St. Monica Catholic Church, in Whitefish Bay. Our COA class is going strong. UCN members were invited to share their spiritual practices on December 4th. Thanks to all that participated! Students will have a COA Sunday service in September 2023. More details will be available later in the year.
