Welcome to Ms. Ingle's Class!
About our class
This year, Claxton 5th graders will be following a more traditional classroom model. Each homeroom class will stay with their own assigned teacher for the entire day except during specials. In the past, students have rotated to different teachers for separate subjects throughout the day. As a grade level, we are very excited about this shift back to firm homeroom settings. This will enable us to have more time with our students and concentrate on more specific areas of educational concern.
Notebooking
Our class will create 'interactive notebooks' for every academic subject this school year. Students will basically work to create a movable, working textbook for reading, math, science and social studies. By creating these notebooks as they go through the curriculum, students are more in tune with their learning and tend to internalize content more effectively. These notebooks will be a big part of classwork grades and test preparations for the entire school year. Be prepared to take good care of them! :)
Muddy Sneakers
We are so fortunate to participate in a program called 'Muddy Sneakers' as a part of Asheville City Schools. All 5th graders go on field trips during each unit of study in their science curriculum. All students are expected to attend all Muddy Sneakers field trips and will receive a grade for each trip's activities. We will need MANY parent volunteers to help us on these frequent science-based trips. Please let me know right away if you are willing to help out on any of these special days.
Washington DC
5th grade curriculum covers American history. As a culminating part of this study, we will take a 3 day trip to our nation's capitol. We will have frequent meetings and various fundraisers throughout the school year to help prepare for this fantastic, memorable experience. Please plan to attend our 5th grade curriculum night for our first big info meeting about this trip. We plan to have representatives from our chosen tour company present for questions and answers about trip details.
Daily 5
Over the next few weeks, we will be diving in to our Daily 5 reading program. Students will begin by building their reading stamina. As the days pass, students will grow to quite capably manage multiple self-selected reading activities. Those activities will include the following 5 choices:
- Read to Self
- Work on Writing
- Read to Someone
- Listen to Reading
- Word Work
Stay tuned for more details about each of the above.
Daily 3
Our math curriculum will follow much the same structure as our reading time. However, students will work with only 3 choices during their math time. Those choices are as follows:
- Math by Myself
- Math Writing
- Math with Someone
More details will come as we dive deeper into our school year.

The Leader in Me
This school year, your child will benefit from learning to implement the '7 Habits of Highly Effective People'. Our entire school is participating in this exciting new leadership theme. It is my hope that your child will learn to be a great leader in his or her own life, as well as the lives of others. Stay tuned for some interesting 'leadership' talk from Claxton kids.
My basic info:
I am so very thrilled to be your teacher for what promises to be a wonderful journey this school year. I look forward to getting to know you all very well and am happy to make myself available for questions or concerns at any time.
