Summer Programming Update
We continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on current and future programming and events, including summer programs. I am writing to provide an update on the status of summer programming for 2020.
We are committed to taking all steps necessary to help maintain the wellbeing of students and staff. As such, we are following Governor Laura Kelly's plan to reopen Kansas, along with guidance from Johnson County health officials, as well as cooperating with all Johnson County public school districts.
The State of Kansas announced four phases to reopen the state (Ad Astra: Plan to Reopen Kansas). Each phase has a tentative timeline, which is subject to extension due to health circumstances surrounding the pandemic. Please note that the new plan to reopen Kansas does not change the Governor’s original order (EO 20-07) closing all school facilities until May 29, 2020.

Special Grant for SPED Teachers on Waivers—Spread the Word!
There is a grant program at ESU for new special education teachers on waivers. The ESU Teachers College Special Education Fellows Program (TCSEFP) is an 11-month fellowship program that leads to an endorsement in high incidence special education (K-6 or 6-12) for teachers working on a high incidence special education waiver in Kansas. The TCSEFP uses online course delivery to support real-time interactions with teachers throughout Kansas. The benefits of the fellowship are:
- Endorsement completion in 11 months.
- Intensive and explicit on-the-job mentoring to ensure success in the first year on the job.
- Program completion with a cohort of students across the state of Kansas.
- Financial support to cover most of the tuition associated with the endorsement.
Please note, to qualify for this program the individual would need to be hired on a waiver as a special education teacher during the 2020-2021 school year. If you think you have candidates who might be interested, please have them review this information.
