Teen Depression
“Depression among adolescents is a serious public health problem that is all too often overlooked, and the consequences can be devastating,”- SAMHSA Administrator, Pamela S. Hyde, J.D.
Some causes include:
- Poor self-esteem
- Negatively distorted thoughts
- Losing a loved one
- Family problems
Common Symptoms:
- Unexplained changes in mood and behaviour
- Feelings of worthlessness and guilt
- Suicidal thoughts
- Anger and hostility
- Rebellious and antisocial behaviour
- Changes in appetite and sleep patterns
How can we help?
Friends and family should:
- Watch out for major symptoms and take them seriously
- Try to emphasize with the teen if he or she acts out, as it can be a cry for help
- Listen and be supportive
- Make sure they get the professional help they need (therapy and/or medication)
