Counselor's Corner
Hello Keith Families,
It is the last month of the 22-23 school year!! It is hard to believe we are here! It has been a pleasure and joy to be a part of your children's lives this year. If you need anything over the summer feel free to email us. We will check them periodically and get back to you as soon as possible. We will be available by phone starting again in August.

Counselor Tips
This month we want to focus on some tips to help prevent the summer slide. It is important to keep up academic learning in the summertime so that less review time is needed in the fall. Below are some easy suggestions for fighting the summer slide:
Keep kids reading! Visit your local library for low-cost or free summer reading options. Set aside reading time each day and consider setting up a reward system for when kids finish books.
Look for camps that keep skills fresh and fun. STEM camps might focus on engaging topics like space or robotics is a good option.
Take a visit to one of our city's museums or the zoo. Many offer low-cost or free days during the summer months.
Play board games. Board games can help students practice any number of skills including math, problem-solving, decision-making, planning and c, cooperation.
Learn a new skill like typing or coding. There are a lot of online programs to teach kids that can be done in just a few minutes a day.
Whatever you decide to do make it fun. Preventing the summer slide can be done with just a few minutes each day and does not need to look like “work.” When kids are playing they are learning too!
Counselor Lessons
In May we will be talking about how to stay safe during the summertime in a variety of situations. We will also discuss the transition to next year’s grade level and the transition to middle school with our 5th-grade students.
Gifted and Talented Information
Nominations for GT testing for this school year have closed. If your child was tested this year results were sent home on April 3rd with your student.

If you have any additional questions about GT testing or the GT program please email Nicole.Carroll@cfisd.net
Credit by Exam Information
Students in grades K-5 will have four opportunities during the school year to use “credit-by-exam” to accelerate to another grade level. Students will only have one opportunity to test for each grade level considered. The best time to test is during the summer. Summer testing information is available now.
Students who earn scores of 80% or better on each component of the credit-by-exam will qualify to advance one grade. Only one grade level may be “skipped” each year. No retests will be given.
If you are interested in getting more information about credit-by-exam, please contact Nicole.Carroll@cfisd.net
