Mrs. Baucum's 5th Grade Newsletter

Cub Run Elementary School

Welcome Back!

I am so excited to be starting another great year here at Cub Run Elementary School! I hope that you are just as excited to start this journey with your fifth grader as we dive back into the classroom and check out some awesome new information. You can expect a weekly class newsletter to keep you updated on all that will be taking place during the year.

What are we up to this week?

This week in math we are getting started with reviewing place value and what we learned in fourth grade. It is important to review back to last year to help build upon what we will be learning this year for our SOL.

Language Arts

In reading this week, we are working on setting up our Reader's Workshop. We will talk about how to choose a book and what reading really is. We are suggesting books to others and learning how to give a great book talk.

In writing this week, we are setting up our Writer's Workshop and beginning to think about why writers write and refresh our skills. Writing is one of the SOLs your fifth grader will have to take this year. Please encourage your child to do writing at home.

Science/Social Studies

This week we are getting started on setting up our classroom and understanding what it means to be a responsible citizen. We will be discussing our hopes and dreams for this school year as well as creating a set of class rules. We will also be talking about logical consequences and taking responsibility for our own actions.
