Fifth & Sixth Grade News

November 16, 2015

Hello Fifth and Sixth Grade Families!

Hope everyone had a great weekend! This week, the students will be taking DRA Tests to assess reading fluency and comprehension. The tests do not affect grades but give us more information on our students' reading levels. We will be able to compare levels from last year to see how much progress has been made.

Update on Report Cards: Report cards will be sent home on Friday, November 20th. Parent Teacher conferences are scheduled for Monday, November 23rd and Tuesday, November 24th. If you are unsure of your scheduled time or need to reschedule, please contact Berenice in the office - .

The Book Fair is next week! It is a great way to get everyone excited about reading. You can also make online purchases for an extended time through this website:

What are we learning this week?

  • 6th Grade Math is reviewing multiplying and dividing decimals and fractions.
  • 5th Grade Math is learning how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
  • Practicing multiplication facts is key for both grade levels!

Language Arts:

  • This week we will be finishing The Westing Game and reviewing point of view, literary devices such as foreshadowing, and theme. We will also be figuring out the "mystery" of the novel and completing our character profiles.
  • Spelling Lesson 10 focuses on easily confused words such as angle vs angel, affect vs effect, adapt vs adopt.

Social Studies:

  • We just completed the first unit in Social Studies which was all about building a foundation of applicable skills to use in Social Studies, such as Cartography and map skills, Archaeology, how the past has affected us, what would cause cultural changes, how people interact with the world, and using historical evidence.
  • This Friday, our students will become Cartographers themselves and make their own globes!
