PTO Buzz
Welcome back! We hope you had a great summer and a ready to have a fun school year! Please mark your calendars for the following events. (Yes, we’re starting off with a lot, but we promise to slow down… a little…maybe...)
SEPTEMBER 10th: Orders are due for the Hornung “Mum Fundraiser”. Please see the attached flier for details. A big thanks to everyone who has all ready ordered.
SEPTEMBER 12th: Our first local dining fundraiser. Stop by Olga’s Kitchen at 8485 W. Grand River anytime; present the flier; and they’ll give back a percent of your bill to the school.
SEPTEMBER 14th: Applications are due for the “Color Run”. We need these submitted so we can order t-shirts & awards. Kids love this event and registration is required. There will be races, food trucks, music, and Kona Ice. Families are welcome to bring siblings. This is a major source of fundraising for the PTO, so we hope you can generously donate to a level you’re comfortable with. Please see the attached flier for details.
Friday, September 16th: Our first Hornung PTO Meeting!!! We’ll start shortly after drop-off in the school. Check-in is required at the main office. There are many fun opportunities to volunteer for events such as the Color Run, Popcorn Days, Hornung Hut (the school store), Monster Mash Halloween Bash, etc. Please join us!
We were busy over the summer and some exciting things are underway. Sometime this year, we’ll break ground for a new playground area for the lower grades. This will contain four new playscapes that are size-appropriate for our younger kids. We are also adding some shorter hoops to the basketball court this fall. Thanks to a generous donation of materials and labor, there is now decking for the teacher’s outdoor space. Finally, the outdoor classroom tents are going up, so teachers may opt outside for a lesson.
You can join the Hornung Elementary PTO group on FaceBook. We have a brand new website: www.hornungpto.com with many options to stay informed/notified and even to pre-pay for events such as our Popcorn Day.
Your PTO,
President: Deanne Ferrell
Vice President: Erin Bradley & Lesley Beebe
Treasurer: Michele Mannooch
Secretary: Bill Rockwell
504 Plan Information
504 Plans…Many of you have heard of a 504 Plan, but you may not know the specifics of how this legislation can support students. As the Building Principal, I am the coordinator of 504 Plans. If after reading this correspondence, you feel that your child may qualify for a 504 Plan, please contact me at school and I’d be happy to discuss the possibilities. The following is the definition of a student (person) who can qualify for a 504 Plan. A person who:
A. has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities (i.e. learning).
B. has a record of such an impairment, or
C. is regarded as having such an impairment.
Students who don’t qualify as handicapped under special education law, including those with ADHD, may have rights under Section 504. Students who have medical concerns (i.e. Diabetes, Juvenile Arthritis, Celiac Disease, etc.) will almost always qualify to have a 504 Plan in place. Identifying Needs for an Academic or Medical 504 Plan…
Regular education interventions are tried by parent, student, teaching staff over an extended period of time (i.e. assignment book, weekly progress reports, tutoring/Response to Intervention support).
2. School records indicate long term academic problems/concerns.
3. Medical diagnosis and/or documentation of disability are obtained (Generally by the parent from the physician. Note: Medical forms must be on file in the nurse's office if the student is on medication).
4. Documentation is sent to the 504 Coordinator/Building Principal.
5. Building team evaluates documentation of disability, school records, and teacher input to determine whether a student may qualify as handicapped under 504.
6. A 504 meeting is scheduled if deemed appropriate.
The 504 Meeting: Planning for Success…
Invitations are sent by the 504 Coordinator to: All adults with knowledge of the student’s abilities and needs. This could include any of the following: Principal (if not the coordinator), Parent/Guardian, Teacher, Counselor/Social Worker, School Psychologist, Nurse, Outside Professional, RtI Coordinator.
On the Meeting Date:
1) Documentation of disability is reviewed: Parent or Professional who did the evaluation presents findings and how the disability adversely affects learning and school performance. (For ADD/ADHD eight of the fourteen characteristics must be present).
2) Determination is made by the team whether the student qualifies for a 504 Plan.
3) Accommodations/Plan of Action agreed upon by the committee members: It is decided what accommodations best would suit the student to assist in school success. These are written down and the document is signed by all present.
