Reflections from Ms. Perkins

WBMS Parents and Guardians –

When our students are personally invested, I become super excited! While I observe this conduct every day in classrooms where students routinely own their learning and behavior, this week was outstanding because so many students exhibited investment in their school. The week began with our BETA students spreading kindness by greeting their peers with smiles and positive signs. When our 5th graders came to visit, our students ran the show! Our 6th grade Bridge Team and 8th grade WEB Leaders welcomed the 5th graders, shared information about our school, led tours, and answered questions. I met with the Principal’s Advisory Committee this week, a group of students from each grade level who share joys and concerns; and as always, they arrived ready to express their insights regarding what is going well and where we need to grow as a school. In addition, I received emails from a couple students and was able to meet with them to discuss their thoughts and solutions about how to improve WBMS. Lastly, our Student Council Officers set up a lunch date with me so we can consider some upcoming events they have planned. Throughout this week, I was beyond impressed by our students’ composure, maturity, and desire to make their school better; they are owning the direction of the school, which makes me a very proud principal!

Risks and Dangers of Vapes and E-Cigarettes

WBMS Parents/Guardians:

As shared in last week’s Friday Notes, the Fulton County School System is raising awareness about the risks and dangers around student use of vapes/e-cigarettes.

Our schools will be educating parents, students, and communities using three approaches: Awareness/Prevention, Intervention and Response. During the second week, the county is focusing on intervention for students. Each school has been provided access to vaping prevention lesson information from the CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) My Breath Program (https://catchinfo.org/modules/e-cigarettes) and will decide how best to share this information with students. WBMS incorporated the CATCH My Breath Program in all health classes at the beginning of the school year.

This program has three intended outcomes: 1) Understand that e-cigarettes are addictive, unhealthy and not as popular as believed; 2) Resist their own curiosity and peer pressure to experiment with e-cigarettes; and 3) Encourage friends and peers not to use e-cigarettes. For parents who have students who might be struggling with tobacco addiction, there are two intervention resources we encourage you to review:

https://teen.smokefree.gov/
https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/national-helpline

Over the next couple of weeks, I will continue to share additional communication that will contain information on our third approach: response. Thank you in advance for partnering with us to prevent, intervene and respond to this ever-growing safety concern facing our students. At Fulton County Schools, we believe students come first, and their safety is a top priority. Thank you for your support in this effort.

Webb Bridge MS 7th grade parents and community!

The 7th grade is headed to the JA Discovery Center Finance Park in Gwinnett on February 20, 21 and April 9, 2019.

Junior Achievement Volunteers Needed: We will need 10-15 volunteers on each day (February 20, 21 and April 9, 2019). You can go on a different day than your child if it works better for your schedule. As a volunteer you will be working directly with the students in each ‘store’ at Finance Park. Volunteers are required to report at the JA Discovery Center at the Gwinnett Discovery Center at 8:30 am for training. Volunteers will not ride the bus with us, but we can help you work out carpools with other parent volunteers on that day. You may also ask friends or co-workers. All volunteers must be verified through the Fulton County Volunteer registration process, which takes up to two days to process.

FBLA

FBLA held its general meeting on Friday, March 8. As part of the agenda students who participated in the State Leadership Conference were recognized as well as those students placing in the top five of their respective online testing categories. In addition, Kaushal Gokare of the Alpharetta High School FBLA chapter joined our students in discussion of ways to promote our spring community service drive, Relay for Life Luminaria dedications. For $10, a luminaria may be dedicated In Honor, In Memory, or In Support of a friend or loved one affected by cancer. During the meeting several members chose to speak of loved ones who lost their battle with cancer as the membership prepared signs for the luminaria sale. Webb Bridge Middle School will again be hosting this year’s North Fulton Relay for Life event on Saturday, May 11, and our FBLA members, in partnership with the AHS FBLA membership, will seek to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. We ask the Webb Bridge community to please support our efforts by dedicating a luminaria or donating to our school’s Relay team “Webb Way for a Cure” at https://tinyurl.com/WebbWayForACure2019.
