"Love First, Last, & Always"
As we step into the second part of our school year and begin the month of February, known for its focus on love, it seems appropriate to stop and reflect on our faith theme this year, to “Love first, last, and always” (John 4:19).
Jesus calls us to act with love in all we do and towards all who cross our path. We have heard this, we know this, and we strive for this. Love thy neighbor. It isn’t easy; it's a conscious choice we make each day.
But what does it truly mean to LOVE someone?
St. Thomas Aquinas says that “to love is to will the good of another”. To love someone is to truly want what is best for another and to wish them well.
God calls us to love everyone, not just our neighbor. Even those who frustrate us? Yes. Even those who disagree with us? Yes. Even those who have opposing beliefs? Yes. Even those who irritate and annoy us? Yes, them too. God calls us to love by wanting what is best for others, regardless of who they may be, what they may believe, or how different they may be from us.
To want what is best for every single one of God’s children. No exceptions. That's love.
Inspired by reflections from Mr. Paul Corrigan.
